I would have like to have watched that match to see what exactly was happening. Just looking at the scores it has all the appearance of a match where one player throws everything including the kitchen sink at the first 9 games and then runs out of steam. If that is what happened it would suggest that Lisa is capable of playing at a very high standard and just needs to work on improving her stamina to achieve it.
No matter how much of the kitchen Lisa was throwing at Amy in the first 9 games, stamina issues after 9 games ? Surely not.
She is just off her close season which according to he video included a 3 week fitness block without picking up a racquet. Yes, she said she had a leg niggle that didn't allow her to complete it, but she does seem to have done a lot of work, so I don't see it. Would be a bit alarming even without a fitness block.
But early season, and still not having played much tennis what I do imagine more is inconsistency, which could have contributed to a change in the momentum of the match, and such momentum changes are actually not so totally unusual anyway in women's matches at most levels - most of us have probably seen the occasional 0 - 6 6 - 0 6 - 0 / 6 - 0 0 - 6 6 - 0 scorelines or at least pretty close to these.
As Ratty and I discuss elsewhere ( at inordinate length in the Australian Open - women thread ) once a women player is on top they can reel off game after game without being as on top as one might imagine pointswise, and Steven seems to confirm that Lisa was still getting a decent share of points latterly, just not winning games. That can happen.
Naa, for whatever reasons, form / confidence shifts by one or both, the upperhand has shifted from Lisa to Amy and while each is on top they have reeled off a large number of games. Could even be some injury issue like that leg niggle has come back to effect Lisa.
Anyway, I do agree that these first 9 games are very encouraging, assuming Amy was playing anywhere near her normal form. What a player can do at their best is always what interests me most re their potential. It's what continues to be most exciting about Laura.
It would be very interesting to hear how Lisa saw it.
