RE: Weeks 22 & 23: French Open (Roland-Garros) (red clay)

Unbelievable!  Gasquet taken apart by Andy in the third & fourth sets, the entire match lasting a shade under 2½ hours:

L16:  (17) Richard Gasquet (FRA) WR 20 lost to (4) Andy Murray WR 4 by 6-1 4-6 1-6 2-6 smile

*****

QF:  (6) David Ferrer (ESP) WR 6 vs (4) Andy Murray WR 4   bleh

Really can't see Andy winning that one, but I'd love to be proved wrong...

I wonder which of the posters on this board called that one right? Oh, I remember, it was me!

Modest to a fault, aren't you, Ratty? disbelief

Gasquet came out blazing while Andy could hardly get a ball in the court, except for the ones that went in the net. Once Andy started playing well in the second set Gasquet, as is fairly usual when things aren't going too well for him, imploded. At the start of the fourth set he seemed to come out with fresh resolve, but a few good shots by Andy and the Frenchman was gone again.

I wasted so much time while I was waiting for Andy's match to start that as soon as it was over, I had to go and do a lot of chores!

Andy really fed off the crowd hating him. I thought he was toast half way through the second set. Brilliant response.
Fantastic match Gasquet must be totally gutted.
Come on Andy !!!

I know that feeling, but without the chores at the end

I have to travel to a conference today so I will probably miss the majority of this unless I get lucky at an airport. Good luck Andy!

Someone suggested a few boos at Wimbledon to get him going!

Head above parapet again.
I really think an option would have been to give the end of the clay season a miss and recouperate. I know nobody wants to miss a slam but with the stupid Olympics
effing things up it should have been considered.
Obviously it makes Lendl's contribution less relevant, but I see the US Open as being a real chance.
Queens irrelevant, Wimbledon unlikely.

Think you maybe missed quite a few heads above the parapet before with that observation once he clearly was suffering back trouble  wink

Anyway he played on and I would imagine done as well as most folk expected given his draw.

I'm with Madeline in being encouraged in that like on hard he has shown more aggressive intent on clay in the past, his instincts seem now much better than so often in the past.

Serve could have been better, but so often thus, as for years and err years and years.  Have I mentioned this before ?  wink  The guy does so well generally with what I consider am ongoing general handicap.  Next project for Ivan !  ( including maybe first convincing our man that it is a big issue )

Who knows how his back is now.  Andy insists his back spasms are unrelated  ( but totally unrelated ? )  to the general back issue that he has apparently had for most of the year.  If it was just the French Open spasms I wouldn't be too concerned but the whole back issue stuff is a worry.

To me, Andy's general form, fitness willing, seems pretty good going into the grass court season.

That was a bit of a throw away. Hard work done and then broken for the set.
