Week 38 - ATP 250 - St Petersburg (Hard)

Fleming/Hutchins and Delgado/Skupski should both be here in the doubles but singles qualifying has thrown up unexpected British involvement.

QR1: (q7) Morgan Phillips WR 537 v Bye

QR2: (q7) Morgan Phillips WR 537 v (qwc) Vugar Aliev (RUS) UNR

Aliev is a 19 year old who played 3 matches in futures in 2008 and 2010 and never won a set. On paper looks like a great bit of scheduling and a very easy 6 points. Could have been even better but unfortunately he is the same section as (q1) Kumantsov WR 340, the only top 500 player in the draw.

I had just looked at the Trnava CH draw and hoped Morgan was going to be there and was disapointed!

Skupski playing with Franky Moser now, Delgado has a back injury I think.

cant believe how weak the qualifying is, why am i not playing these events! potential to play someone ranked 600-700 for 12 points to qualifying for a tour event.
sums tennis schedulling up, its everything.

Playing in St Petersburg was surely planned a good while beforehand though as Russian visas/invitations would have had to be sorted in advance

And I thought I was "on the ball".  You had the result up before the ATP site had the match finished !

It isn't that unusual to see qualifying events like this. Similarly qualifying for the Petange (Luzembourg) challenger last week was very, very weak with only 12 entries (10 of whom were unranked) for a 32 man draw. One win against an unranked guy netted you 5 points and a shot at the main draw.

Problem is finding the weak draws isn't always easy. This week last year qualifying for ATP Metz was very weak. This year it had a full draw of 32 including 8 players in the top 200. I guess you need a bit of nerve, flexibility and the finance to be able to make a last minute call to go to an event like this when it looks like the field is going to be weak.

The match was on Bet365 which tends to run ahead of ATP live scores.

Easiest 6 points I bet Morgan has earned in some time, It's certainly worthwhile looking for these as there is always chances of easy points, particularly in some of the Challenger qualies as RJA said.
