RE: Week 39 - Challenger ($50,000) - Madrid (Clay)

3 of the 4 qualifiers here were drawn against 3 of the top 4 seeds! The fourth, Alex W, draws a WC! Unless there's an angle I'm not aware of, this is a very good break indeed!! Let's hope he takes his chance, defends his points from last year, and pushes on.

L16: (Q) Alexander Ward WR 440 v Pedro Sousa (POR) WR 232

Alex could really do with going further here. So far he has picked up 10 points but that only covers what he he is defending from last year and next week he has another 18 points to defend.

Good win. Sousa is actually up to WR 232 this week. Alex beat him in straight sets in the Dominican Republic in 2008.

Ward's match is under way. First three games all went against the serve. Alex now trails *1-3

Great win for Alex This will be his 2nd Challenger singles QF - he reached his first by upsetting Taylor Dent in R1 at Nottingham in 2010.

I'm pretty sure (without checking exhaustively) that this means the only Brits to have reached clay court Challenger QFs since Martin Lee at Telde in 2006 have both been called Ward!

In the QFs, Alex will play the winner of the match that has just started between 3rd seed and former world no. 22 Albert Montañés and Jan-Lennard Struff.
