I hope he does as well but I notice that he he withdrew from the week 19 futures in Florida where he would have been the second seed.

Meanwhile there are now only 7 players on the qualifying list for An-Ning. Presumably there will be fair few late entries but the draw is going to be very weak.

I am baffled as to how. He is one out with 2 SEs to clear. No one in Savannah who is still playing should get an SE as they are either in the main draw already or would have been had they entered. The only other challenger this week is in Brazil and there is only one possibility from there they would meet the criteria and that is only if he wins a match that is on court right now.

Nice to see Alex Ward having a go at ATP qualifying.

Nice to see him play but he's not exactly in form and Berrer will beat him easily in SS.

While I always welcome British players testing themselves at higher levels I question the thought that has gone into this. There are two ATP 250 events in Europe this week on clay plus two clay court challengers in Europe and another in North Africa. This has invariably left the challenger draws pretty weak and Alex would have been seeded in qualifying of any of the three. Strikes me that that would have been a smarter option because as Jaggy says, it is hard to see him beating Berrer.

Very true - my first thought was it's good to see some ambition from Alex (and indeed it is), but looking at the Challenger qualifying draws and the number of Futures on next week, I wonder if this was really the ideal week to go for an ATP.

Maybe it just fits into his overall travel plans for these few weeks better but Ostrava (on the same surface, I think), where he'd have been seeded in qualifying, can't be that much harder to get to from Grasse than Munich is.

Johannesburg is, as always, the place where the really 'easy' points are likely to be found.

Alex told me he was 2 out and didn't get in. Maybe he was wrong and forgot about the se spots? I guess we'll find out soon
