Just spent 15 mins looking through them and, goodness, it's almost like taking sweets off a baby - they're practically GIVING the points away.

The Greek and Algerian 10k tournaments have no qualy round. The MDs are very weak.

Even the 25k in France this week has only 15 players in the Qualifying round - three ranked (over 1000), 12 unranked.

Compare that to the Shrewsbury 25k - a full 26 qualy list, starting at WR 313 and going to 1000.

Why wouldn't the girls just go over to France ? (Not to mention getting a cheap flight to Greece or Algeria or wherever).

I don't know what their individual programmes are but there are good point-scoring tournaments out there and they don't seem to be wanting to try and take advantage.

Just as an example, there was a very good newspaper article about Lucy Brown a few months back (posted here). She set out a good view of the rest of the year, including her goals of getting into the top 500, then the top 350 (can't remember exactly but quite ambitious). Well, I know that you've got to do training blocks but you can't get into the top 350 unless you play some tournaments ! And cheap points would be a good start.

PS trying to be 'Pollyanna', maybe it means that some of the other women will get artificially high rankings and that our women will beat them when they get drawn against them later.

I agree that it's crazy how little thought seems to go into scheduling. Of course, we can't be aware of all the constraints the lower-ranked Brits are working under, so maybe that's a bit unfair (and well done to the higher-ranked ITF-level Brits who went to Canada, always a good combination of good conditions and fields that aren't TOO strong cf Europe and the US) but with so few women's 10Ks in the UK this year, it seems sad that we don't have a more women out in Europe this week when there are such inviting opportunities to get points and some confidence-giving wins without going too far afield.

By the way, Algeria only has 2 byes in the main draw (cf 10 in Greece) but in Algeria, only the top 4 seeds are ranked in the top 1000!

And the Quali draw is out in Kyoto where Robyn Beddow was the first Alt - no sign on her in Q so she must have made the main draw. . . .

Sadly for her legion of fans on here, the main draw is now out and Robyn isn't in it. Given that she will now be out of the rankings for at least two weeks, I wonder if we'll see her in an ITF draw again.

You've got to smile hmm.

However, well done, it shows that your initial scepticism was spot on. And there was me, thinking that if you're down for a tournament and you haven't withdrawn, then you must be playing it  . . .

With the best will in the world, though, it won;t be a huge loss for GB tennis if Robyn now has other plans . . .

Anyone know why Ashley Hewitt, compared to the vast majority of other GB players, seems to have entered so few tournaments this year. His next tournament is in 2 weeks time which I think means he will have had a longish break before having played 2 weeks in Belgium, then will be taking a 3 week break before starting a new tranch of tournaments in week 39. 2 weeks of tournaments in Belgium doesn;t sound like the typical run of 3 or 4 weeks that most players opt for ahead of a "break" (not that they rest too much).

Not complaining, since he has done very well indeed this year, just interested to see if anyone knows if this is a deliberate (and it would seem successful) policy, or perhaps more a function of limited funds. If it's the latter, would seem a shame.

I can't remember to what extent these figures were injury-affected, but he only played 7 tournaments in 2011 and 10 tournaments in 2012, so it might be a deliberate policy.

If so, he may be doing what the majority of non-Brits seem to do - one thing that has been very noticeable over the years of doing the GB top 25 tables (and working out projected new rankings) is that the Brits nearly always seem to have played the most tournaments of any player with the same number of ranking points, which suggests that maybe the Brits do (if anything) overplay a bit ... or the cynical could take it as implying they are simply not that good.

Or it may simply be a consequence of GB being a small country with many more home $10ks and $15ks per year than many other countries (Belgium, Croatia, Serbia, etc) and/or better funding in the round over 25 players than the average pro player from abroad. Whatever Ash is doing - whether as a precaution or by design, seems to be working
