It has gone 4 games to Sakai, 2 to Dasha, 4 to Sakai so far - 2-6 0-2*

Emily is about to serve for a 1st set bagel though

No real surprises today, despite what the rankings (and in Dasha's case, the bookies) implied. 12th straight sets loss in a row for Dasha, I'm afraid.

L32: Laura Deigman WR 779 lost to (WC) Alessia Piran (ITA) WR 1070 (= CH) by 3 & 4
L32: (8) Danielle Konotoptseva WR 803 lost to (Q) Yuriko Sakai (JPN) WR 1186 (CH 840 in 2012) by 2 & 1
L32: (2) Emily Webley-Smith WR 422 beat (Q) Olga Babanova (RUS) UNR by 0 & 1

L16: (2) Emily Webley-Smith WR 422 v Amelie Intert (GER) WR 1032 (CH 1005 in Aug)

Was thinking the same Paulisi but then Laura's results are not great either

Laura's results aren't great, but she's certainly generally much more competitive than Sabrina unfortunately has become in the last year.

Someone equated Laura with Sabrina last year, and it was pointed out then ( not by me ) with some stats that that was unfair.

She's probably a bit overranked, actually due to a decent schedule, but she has still won matches to achieve her ranking.

Was very surprised too by Dasha's odds, though kind of thought there must be negative issues with her opponent more than just being lower ranked. Hmm..

I don't bet these days, but looks as if there was an unpatriotic bet to be struck there. I wonder what's the main cause(s) of her much poorer results over the last 6 months or so.

I saw Dasha in Edinburgh last year she played a really good first set against Anna Smith

It was me that compared Laura's results to Sabrina and I'm afraid both Laura and Dasha will disappear from the ranking just like Sabrina.

Im assuming they are from well off backgrounds and can afford to play and experience the world which is fair enough and good luck to them but surely they can't be serious about a career.

Talking of which where is Robyn Beddow

Think you're right in one case, wrong in the other, but believe both are serious about having a career having been focussed on their tennis from a young age.  However, I do think players who spend too long in the lower grade tournaments can get 'stuck', trudging from dull event to dull event, getting disheartened and not improving their tennis.

Well done Em and good luck to all in the dubs.

The trouble with Laura's points tally in particular (although this applies to other girls in this category, of course) is that is solely based on a few 10k QFs, which last year gave 4 points and this year, if copied, will only give 2 points.

As I say, obviously other girls will have a similar profile so if everyone goes down the same the ranking won't change. But the QFs were particularly generous before and it's a problem for girls like Laura.

Dashs has a RU place which gave 8 points last year and 7 this, and a place in final is certainly more 'worthy', so arguably her tally looks better. However, she's so far off repeating antything like a RU place this year that it's rather academic . . .

Well done Em looking at the players in the draw here there are only really one or two she shouldn't be winning by this score though. A lot of the seeds in this draw have just about got most of their points from Egypt which suggests overranked players. Would be good to see her take the title now.

Have to say I'm not a big fan of Em's potential QF match-ups (Kazimova is currently a set up but a break down) but if she can come through that match which will be much tougher either way, hopefully she can keep going.

Slightly surprised she isn't staying for another week, and instead going to Preston, given we know she hates playing indoors.
