Two higher-ranked opponents beaten, GB nos. 4-6 all through and a much better scoreline in defeat for Manisha than many people probably expected. I'd say that's a good day
L32: (WC) Samantha Murray WR 230 beat (WC) Jessica Simpson WR 956 by 0 & 1 L32: (WC) Manisha Foster WR 711 lost to (3) Kristyna Pliskova (CZE) WR 147 (CH 86 in 2013) by 4 & 5 L32: Tara Moore WR 239 beat (5) Marta Sirotkina (RUS) WR 165 (CH 115 in 2013) by 1 & 4 L32: (WC) Jade Windley WR 288 lost to (Q) Gioia Barbieri (ITA) WR 238 (= CH) by 2 & 1 L32: Naomi Broady WR 222 beat Stéphanie Foretz Gacon (FRA) WR 195 (CH 62 in 2003) by 3 & 4
L16: (WC) Samantha Murray WR 230 v (1) Claire Feuerstein (FRA) WR 136 (CH 116 in 2012) L16: Tara Moore WR 239 v Alberta Brianti (ITA) WR 193 (CH 55 in 2011) L16: Naomi Broady WR 222 v (Q) Anett Kontaveit (EST) WR 201 (= CH)
Kontaveit upset the 2nd seed in R1. Top seed Feuerstein didn't have it all her own way against Smitková (who is ranked just 5 places above Sam) today.
Btw, I should add that the Feuerstein win isn't 100% confirmed. The scores froze on both bet365 and ITF at 6-5 and the stream froze with Feuerstein up 40-15 serving for the match. When the stream came back less than 30 seconds later, the on-screen score said 6-6 in the 3rd but the players were packing up so I think the Frenchwoman must have won! Edit: now confirmed that she won 7-5 in the 3rd.

What happened to Katy's LL spot, or did something go awry there ?!
There just weren't any - she was obviously gutted, having thought that being first in line would give her a good chance, especially when Birnerová pulled out with illness after playing 5 games, tweeting that she would given her the prize money to have had a chance to play - a tweet she seems to have since diplomatically deleted.
