My mother(84) was knocked down by a van early yesterday, broken ribs, leg, bruised lungs etc. She's still waiting today for a bed in a ward (second on the list)
So I forgot that the qualies started yesterday. Well done the girls.

So sorry to hear of your troubles. All best wishes for your mother, and to you too.
I sincerely hope your mother's OK. However, the order of your post really made me read it twice to check what was the good news about her being knocked down...
Oh dear, at first I read that you thought it was good news that your mother had been knocked down. Never mind, I got it eventually, and I hope she recovers well.
Back in the dim, distant past of the board Imoen and I were known as the witches of the board, casting our spells over Andy's opponents. Nice to see that insomniacfolder has taken over our mantles!

O my goodness. I'm so sorry. Dreadful worries for you. And yes, it was good news that both our girls got through last night.
Good effort last night from Heather and especially JoKo, as I must admit I didn't expect her to win. I think Heather's retirement last week might prove to be a blessing in disguise as she will be fresher for this weeks tournament and she has a good chance of at least making the 2nd round.
Most importantly, best wishes DF, to you and your mother.
Delighted by the results last night for Jo & Heather. Especially impressed by the way that though Jo had a chance to crumble - pulled back from a set up in to a close third set, and missed the first chance to serve out the match - she didn't; she found the strength of character to finish the match off. As that has sometimes been a bit of an Achilles heel, it was great to see her overcome it against a quality opponent on the big stage again, like USO 2012.
The scheduling hasn't been kind to GB fans in one sense: both Heather and Jo are scheduled at the same time.
Schedule 4th March Heather: 2nd after 19:00 UK, and not before 20:00 UK on Stadium 5 Johanna: 2nd after 19:00 UK, and not before 20:00 UK on Stadium 6
Probably lots of quick flicking between two copies of live scores ahead then!
Sorry to hear about your mum, DF - hope she comes out of it ok.

I saw Pereira play at the Wimbledon Qualifiers last year and LOVED her play - so aggressive, hogging the net, rushing up every second minute - completely different to what I expected. Don't know if that was her 'grass court' game but her against Mestach (which Pereira lost when she ran badly out of steam in the third set) was brilliant, one of the highlights. However, if she plays like that normally, I think it may well suit Heather.
That's bizarre - I saw her play against Amanda Carreras the day before that and, based on that, I would have said the complete opposite. They were both trying to play a clay court game on grass and Pereira plays that kind of game better than Amanda, so obviously she won the 1st set fairly easily.
Of course, she didn't need to play any other way in that match and it was her first match on grass, which may explain why she didn't in the set I saw. The 2nd set was closer, so I wonder if she experimented with a more aggressive style in that set (I was concentrating on another match by that stage so it's more than possible that she could have done that without me noticing) and then tried to play that way for the whole of the QR2 match that you saw.

How strange. But, yes, I was really surprised because it was completely against what I'd expected a 'clay court Brazilian' to play like. And it was really pronounced - not just a bit of net play, but a VERY aggressive effort to get to the net.
Given what you say, it's just possible too that she was slightly injured and so thought that her best chance of success lay in short points. Especially against Mestach who has super-fitness to die for. And would maybe explain why the third set was all one way traffic. I'd not even thought of that (she certainly didn't seem injured, just a bit tired in the third) but it's possible. Or, as you say, maybe she's a talented player who has several different gameplans . . .. (although of course it didn't work for her that Q2 day).
pereira didnt do too much but hug the baseline in rio - though that was on clay - and more pertinantley florianopolis (hard) in the last two weeks from the footage ive found
she lost to dulgheru WR141 on the hard court but had beaten torro-flor WR66 - though the spainard is as much a clay courter as pereira i spose
other than mandatories (miami) or warm up for GS (hobart, new haven) and her home town event (florianopolis) she didnt play on anything other than clay in the whole of 2013!!!
she played 57 matches in 2013 only 9 of those were not on clay. her only win not on clay in the whole year was against mandy at wimby!!!
Well done ladies!!
Razzano looked dangerous in the 2nd set, but Hev put her away clinically at the end of that set and then JoKo managed to win a 3 setter which is always positive after losing the 2nd set.
I'd like to think Hev will qualify and fingers crossed Joko can likewise.

I saw the same match as you Stephen (well quite a bit of it anyway) and thought the same - in fact I remember my friend and I being somewhat amused at the pair of them using such a strong clay court style of play on grass, so also surprised at CD's assessment.
I must have really seen her on a weird day. I'd be wondering if I was having a senile moment but I actually made notes about the matches saw (sad, I know), and watched a lot of that match - the crowd was actually really noisy and into it because it was great fun to watch.
I'm not surprised though that it's not her normal game - some of it was quite suicidal! She's probably back to her favourite clay style now, having had 'her day' of grass stuff.
