RE: Week 32 - ITF ($10K) - Nottingham, GB - Hard

Emily won 6-1 6-1 enough for a wildcard next week?

Jazzamay won 6-3 6-3

Eden is 6-4 5-4* up

Any particular reason Alicia Barnett is classed as English in the ITF page, where as all the other players are British?

It happens for a handful of Brits who don't play that often - just a mistake that has never been put right, I think.

With 4 Brits through and 1 all-GB R2 match still to go, there will be 5 British quarter-finalists here despite just 1 Brit being seeded

A fantastic performance (especially given that the 4 seeds whose places are being taken by unseeded Brits were all beaten by Brits) which definitely suggests that there are enough GB girls around to make it worth holding more 10Ks.

Really encouraging stuff, absolutely agree with the consensus that we need more 10ks and probably at the expense of the 25ks.

Yes, there was a case that folk here had been making even without these great couple of days, which I think is probably a bit more than one could expect on a regular basis.

Get it sorted, LTA !

And well done, girls !

I'm afraid I will have to stick to my incorrect predictions this week and suggest just one semi finalist.

Eden has the top seed, which may be a step too far
Jazzamay may have improved since last year, but I think she will struggle to beat either girl
Manisha v Emily could go either way
Katie looks like a tough match, the Japanese girl has a decent CH this year and she took out a very decent junior in the last round.

As everyone has said (both before, and now) - the argument for more 10ks seems a lot stronger and vindicated.

I do remember a previous 10k, however, that was pretty poor (back in springtime ???)

But the 10Ks in summer seem particularly savvy because,as well as the pro lot, there are (a) the juniors who, by and large, have school/studies/junior tournaments to fit in during the rest of the year and find it a lot more tricky and (b) the college players who are back for summer hols and want a chance to find out where they fit in the scheme of things.

Of course, also just possible that the girls will blow the 25k out of the park next week ! (not that likely though . . . )

The other thing worth mentioning is that not only have we had a heap of great wins but that a lot of the MD losses (nicola George, Fran, beth) and the FQR losses (Georgia, Nicole Peterson, Aimee, Olivia Nichols, Grace Dixon etc.) were three set or tight two set matches - i.e. games that were at the right level and worth something.

A collapse of the seeds in the doubles, with the second, third and fourth seeds losing, and with some excellent results, again, from the non-seeded Brits:

Quarterfinal

Alison BAI (AUS) / Mari TANAKA (JPN) [1] 6-2 6-1 Francesca STEPHENSON (GBR) / Gabriela VAN DE GRAAF (NED)
Sarah Beth ASKEW (GBR) / Charlotte PEARCE (GBR) 6-1 3-6 [10-2] Lou BROULEAU (FRA) / Jazzamay DREW (GBR) [4]
Katie BOULTER (GBR) / Freya CHRISTIE (GBR) 4-6 6-3 [10-7] Mai MINOKOSHI (JPN) / Yumi MIYAZAKI (JPN) [3]
Aimee GIBSON (GBR) / Olivia NICHOLLS (GBR) 5-7 7-6 [10-8] Mana AYUKAWA (JPN) / Akiko OMAE (JPN) [2]

Don't forget Katie and Freya are top junior doubles players, so no surprise. I'd have them down as favourites to win the whole thing.

Yes. That said, they only won 10-7 in the MTB.

I was more pleased for the other four GB girls who are less 'high-flying' but have done great to beat the second and fourth seeds and make the semis.

Beth has also won a doubles title with Katy Dunne, but nice to see some new names.
