RE: Week 35 - Challenger ($50,000) - Bangkok, Thailand (Hard)

Just don't see where this obligation for Tim to be involved in British tennis comes from.  He had a scholarship to Reeds School so took nothing as a junior, he was given support and Felgate as a coach for the 1st couple of years as a pro but then paid his way (admittedly easier in those days) and was successful by dint of his own hard work and focus. He doesn't owe British tennis anything.  His career in itself was good for British tennis.  Why should he be forced to spend the rest of his life doing a role which clearly doesn't appeal just because he got a couple of years of support when he started out? Incidentally, plenty of relatively unsuccessful British players have received a lot more from the LTA and are not under pressure to 'give back'.

So Edberg helped him earlier in his career, Andy has helped Kyle.  These sorts of relationships happen naturally in any sort of environment and I do not see what relevance they have to how an ex-player spends his retirement.

As regards expressing his honest opinion on British tennis when asked by a journalist, why not?

If Tim ever does choose to take a more active tennis role again, sure, he'll have a lot to offer but it is HIS choice.

Henman clearly played first for himself, but in doing so and with his success he gave to British tennis, he was a focal point and helped keep it in the limelight in a relatively fallow period.

Who knows how much youngsters watching his progress and success were brought into tennis by his achievements. British tennis owes a heck more to Tim Urban and Greg Rusedski than vice versa.

It's great that Greg is still so involved ( and thank your for folk's feedback on what they see as his qualities ) and he clearly enjoys it. If there is some element of feeling he needs to give back, good for him.

But neither Tim or Greg really owes, and it was good for us that they were around.

Both are now entitled to carry on with their lives in the ways that give them most pleasure and satisfaction, and personally I really can't be for this goodie and baddie stuff.

Be great if ongoing productive roles can be found in British tennis for former top players, and I would expect the LTA to give this appropriate consideration and make the necessary approaches. The onus is not on the players unless they personally want to make moves.

Tim Urban, eh, sometimes that predictive override is quite inspired :)

Anyway congrats to Kyle - that's the way to do it !

'Obligation', 'owing', being 'forced to spend the rest of his life'? Who conjured up all that, other than you? I described Henman as lazy. You disagree with that view, fair enough.

'Putting something back' is a well-recognised, much-cherished value. It applies to sport particularly where standards of practice and excellence need careful nurture and passage from one generation to the next. Something is wrong, it seems to me, when a line of ex-players prefer to park their bums in TV studios and criticise British tennis (and Henman has made his point many times over, not just once to a single journalist). Henman is representative of that issue. Rather than get out to confront the problem they talk about it. All I see is what you see; organisational failure from the 80s on to produce the player streams so that at any point we have a decent number of top-100 WTA/ATP players. As an ex high level ATP player, there is an awful lot Henman could 'put back' if so inclined.

Interesting though, that 'foreigner' Greg is at least doing something with his talent and know-how. As regards his abilities as coach, the passage of time will tell one way or another. He seems to be doing all the right things albeit at a cost the LTA could not affordably extend to others.

Were I Downey, I'd be talking to Tim as often as I could.

Can't ask for more than that!:) I can't see Kyle on the OoP for Wednesday so another wait, but it's looking good for Kyle to make the QF against an Australian (no jinx). Really keen to see how this swing goes.

Amazing Kyle has just whooped someone in the first round of a challenger and no one has really batted an eyelid that's progress. It would be good to see him go really deep this week. Validating his progress for those hard to please, but at 19 if he doesn't it is all experience in the locker for next time. Really enjoying following british tennis and would not have dreamt of doing so or engaging of encouraging my kids to play what I had previously consider an elitist sport, not that they are likely to solve any of britains tennis problems, but much of this down to them watching an outstanding junior playing in an ITF in the flesh and as a consequence wanting to get involved. So even as a 17 yr old novice professional kyle has got three kids playing who wouldn't.

I don't think it is a question of anyone owing anybody anything and more than happy for henman to play golf, Greg had a tremendous enthusiasm for tennis and is continuing to draw people into the British game not only through his commitments with sky but also through coaching our promising juniors. Again I don't expect him to, but as a sports fan get a great thrill when players who excelled in their job as a professional player love it so much they play until they drop or commit themselves to improving others. It is with that passion I follow sport. But again I don't have any expectation that others should be made the same.

Despite a general ambivalence towards man utd you can't help but admire the spirit drive and commitment of their 1992 youth team who still radiate a love of the game that inspires others. Giggs alledgedly still sleeps with his boots on!

It was an expected battering for someone who is potential top 100 against a player ranked 709. No suprises there.

I expect something similar in the next round as well.

How is someone ranked 709 getting into challengers? Far-flung location?

He was originally in the qualifying draw, so I assumed but maybe incorrectly that he had an SE.

You can only beat what is put in front of you and a few more points in the bag. Dammed if you do dammed if you dont? The British think to do would be to give the points back don't you think.

Probably one of the reasons is that most Challenger players were at the US qualifying or even main draw.

My word, judging by some responses on this thread he could win the thing and still people wouldn't be bloody happy!

Gee, what are some folk getting their knickers in such a twist for ? Folk are generally very supportive of Kyle !

But fortunately we do discuss some aspects about players, rather than just be a 100% cheering squad.

For these that just wish to be 100% positive about all / some / particular British players, fine, but to my mind far too many tellings off of late to others for even the mildest balance let alone criticism, which if fairly considered is fine by me, and if it had points I disagree with I will often say.

Sorry, but this has been building of late, so better out than in.
