Being very familiar with the term ( and quite often been on the receiving end ! ), I hadn't actually realised that "gubbed" was particularly Scottish. Joss would have known it,

gubbed
Scottish, meaning: Soundly beaten, inferring the resultant metaphorical closing of the aforementioned large and loud gub whose outpourings occasioned the gubbing.
