Emily got broken in the 5th game but managed to break back ... only to get broken again in the 11th game and Osaka has just edged the 1st set 7-5

Em did really well to stick with Osaka in that first set. She saved another break point at *4-4 but couldn't repeat that at *5-5.

She's been under huge pressure on serve throughout, and after saving more break points has consolidated s break in the second

5-7 3-0*

Great stuff. Hope she gets a decent 1st round draw to pick up some bigger points

Well done Naomi.

Hope Em and Naomi brought some warm clothes - due to get down to -18C tomorrow night.

Do wonder why this event is played here and at this time of year?

Naomi has got a decent R1 draw, though her opponent has been in good form recently:

L32: (Q) Naomi Cavaday WR 446 v (WC) Lauren Embree (USA) WR 338 (= CH)

Superb Naomi. Would be great if she could win a round here too.

Some effort from Em this, even if the Junior Japanese Phenom settles herself down and comes through.

Oh what a shame. Em is broken to 40 in the eighth game (having recovered from 0-40 and saving a fourth break point straight after and a fifth after missing a game point), but fights back to break to 30 and level at 5-5*, only to drop serve to 30 (saving two match points but not a third) the next time and go out 75 36 75 :(

Absolutely gutted for her but wow, superb effort. I really didn't think it would be as close as it was today just because of what a huge takent Osaka is. She was pulling out Houdini acts constantly, and it's so sad she has nothing to show for all that fight.

It's a shame this trip to the States didn't work out points wise but she seems to be playing well which is the main thing, carrying in her good play from the end of last year.

Her season starts for real with the sun on her back at the Indian 25k in a fortnight - let's hope it's the start of a charge towards the top 250.

Hopefully Naomi is streamed tomorrow. Would be great to see her again after all these years.
