The chance for the Murray brothers, to bring the win home, in front of their Scottish home crowd, will be SO tempting.
And when they said Dom was serving top speed serves at James on Thursday "until his arm practically fell off", I figured that means Dom's not really in it for the doubles, Andy will be the man.
While I agree it will be tempting to play Andy & Jamie, it is all about the W
Yield not to temptation.
Andy and Jamie give a great long and emotional performace in a 5 set defeat to the Bryans as Isner spends the day following all the best recovery techniques to be ready for Sunday....NO, don't do it / allow it, Leon. Quite apart from anything, Andy could ( clearly probably won't ) pick up an injury. Dom or Jamie vs Isner ? No, thanks.
Andy bringing it home tomorrow will do me if Dom & Jamie ( 2 doubles players in form ) don't get it done today.
Really pleased it's Dom and Jamie too.
Shows our team has strength in depth now and less reliant on AM (although obviously very reliant!)
I think if the tie is dead at 3-0, they play 2 x best of three rubbers and whilst they are supposed to use the main players I think it's pretty accepted the junior players get a game for experience. If live at 2-1 and goes 3-1 up, then if the match goes past three sets the final rubber is not played
Where do you think the QF will be played (not getting ahead of myself mind!) - Queen's?
Teams do indeed very often play 'back up' players in dead rubbers, but I always thought that these still had to be from the named team of four - i.e. primarly doubles players or back up singles players from the four named.
Where do you think the QF will be played (not getting ahead of myself mind!) - Queen's?
Queen's would be an obvious choice especially now with the additional week between Queen's and Wimbledon so would have 3 1/2 weeks recovery time for court. Only shame would be the capacity as could fill Queen's 2 or 3 times over. Eastbourne actually has larger capacity 8000 vs 6850 but one less week to prepare court.
Anyway that is a discussion for later today or tomorrow.....
I'm in the Jamie and Dom camp. I think we need a non Andy pairing for the future, and also Dom's beaten the Bryans this years twice already. He deserves a chance. I know he played badly last time, but it was his first tie. I hope he gets the W today.
I don't really follow the doubles pairings enough to have an idea of reasons against this - given how well they did once they got used to each other today wouldn't it make sense for Dom and Jamie to play together regularly and try to be our regular doubles pair to take pressure off Andy in these type's of matches?
Also do people think that today's match suggests they were the right choice or that if Andy had played we'd have finished them off by now?
I definitely think that Dom & Jamie were the right doubles choice. For me, the arguably better chance we would have had in the doubles with Andy playing ( and I think it would have been a better chance and thus a possible win ) was far outweighed by keeping Andy fresh for his singles tomorrow. It doesn't matter what day we clinch the match on ( as hopefully we will ! )
The issue with Dom and Jamue playing regularly together ( repeating myself from the main Davis Cup thread ) is how do you ? / do you ? incentivise them to play regularly together when they have their whole professional careers to consider and the world to choose from for regular partners ( and both are in good shape with their respective regular foreign partners ).
Yes, very promising that they gelled better and better as the match went on and being a regular partnership would increase their understanding and cut down on today's occasional communication problems.
But great as it is for them ( and us ! ) to do well in the Davis Cup, I imagine that they would need to be convinced that they would really work well as a pair on a year round basis.
