If Dino can't beat the Italian on grass, he doesn't deserve to be in the draw.  Surely his best chance ever to reach the second round?

Ferrer has withdrawn; apparently it's Luca Vanni for James.

Do we know for sure that Vanni will take Ferrer's place?  I haven't checked the current regulations but in the past usually when a seed withdraws well before start of play a 33rd seed is added, who either directly replaces or comes in for another seed who is bumped into Ferrer's position in the draw. Vanni would then take the place of the 33rd seed.

No, the deadline for replacing with another seed is before the OOP is released. It was released (just!!) before he withdrew, so a LL is slotted into Ferrer's place.

If the Wimbledon site is to be believed, David, yes!  I checked several times before I amended my original post & it was still showing Ferrer as James' opponent & just stuck my neck out, but the draw has now been updated.

Could say the same for the Italian!

Except his favourite surface is apparently clay... He's Italian, for God's sake!

I assume Dan Evans has no chance of a lucky loser as its ranking based if there are anymore withdrawals? Unless there are 15 more of course ha.

Would a first round win put James into the top 100? Either way he has been given a massive lifeline to progress and has to take it.

Sadly James would need two wins to guarantee breaking top 100. A win would take him close probably but there are others who will probably win a round too plus Gonzalez in playing a challenger where he will probably do well. So one win might take him I'm guessing to 101-105. Two would guarantee it.

Fingers crossed then as cannot help feeling we will see Dino's ranking fall in the second half of the year if he doesn't turn his form around. He has so many points to defend. A couple of wins here would be a massive boost for him.
