Both players didn't serve as well as they usually do but he deservedly edged the game.
Lloyd served a number of double faults in the fifth game which Neil finally broke on about the fourth break point.
Having served the first set out, Neil had a 3-1 lead and should have gained the double break but was still holding serve reasonably comfortably until he served for it at 5-4, he actually served pretty well but Lloyd hit with freedom and earned the break. Lloyd then looked set to take the second set at 6-5 0-30 until Neil stepped it up and a series of winners sent the set to a tie-break.
He then looked set to win the tie break fairly comfortably at 5-1 but a netted forehand gave Lloyd a route back. Both players looked tight with Neil double faulting at *6-4 and Lloyd at *8-7, before the final two points which were very high quality and a Neil forehand winner and a drop volley clinched the title, to Sherbert's obvious relief!
A word too about the event, it had been arranged for a large number of children and their parents to attend for Tennis coaching in the morning before the final, meaning there was a decent crowd including the mayor of Dudley. Credit to the organisers for using the opportunity of a professional tournament to promote the sport more widely, it made for an excellent atmosphere. Apparently yesterday's semifinals were viewed by children from four local schools too. Not sure if it waslocal authority that arranged it or the LTA But well done whoever it was.
It was lovely to see Neil and Lloyd signing autographs for the children after the final. A pair of decent guys.
Well that all got a bit tense! Thought my heart was going to explode in the tie break...especially after going 5-1 up! Very very excited now...hope this is the turning point.

Here is a picture of a stressed sHerbert, shortly after match point who had bravely forsaken a new haircut in order to watch her man!

Hurrah for Mr Pauffley - well deserved and all the better for being hard fought. And hurrah, too, for Mr Glasspool. Lovely to see them both moving up the ranks and doing so well. And thank you for all the reporting, Topemp, it really does make it all very much alive. Great to hear that the tournament was well organised and well attended.
Fantastic week for Neil and Lloyd (and Evan and Billy too). Great to see Neil get the title here and Lloyd's form has been very encouraging. Looking forward to seeing what he can do over the coming months.
Good to see a tennis event making the local news and good to see an audience for the final and hear of activities arranged around it. Well done Tipton - it's what the sport needs. And even more well done Mr Pauffley too!

To be fair some of the finals I have been to have had very decent audiences. Wirral are particularly good at getting local activities and good support and Manchester Sportcity and Manchester Northern also had decent attendances for their finals. Crowd in the middle of the week sometimes leave something to be desired. Ilkley was reasonably well supported as well.
