Good to see a tennis event making the local news and good to see an audience for the final and hear of activities arranged around it. Well done Tipton - it's what the sport needs. And even more well done Mr Pauffley too!
To be fair some of the finals I have been to have had very decent audiences. Wirral are particularly good at getting local activities and good support and Manchester Sportcity and Manchester Northern also had decent attendances for their finals. Crowd in the middle of the week sometimes leave something to be desired. Ilkley was reasonably well supported as well.
Yes, a number do make an effort, Glasgow especially always impresses me, there's school parties coming in for tennis related activities and then watching a match all week long. I just think it's worth flagging up when an effort is made as it's something we need much more of. The majority of our stable of players are not world beaters but they generally produce a good enough standard of tennis to be entertaining and worth watching.
I always feel the LTA could use it's website much better in this regard. You know, a link from the front page to any professional events / BTs happening in the next month. In a spectator friendly format. When play starts. How to get there. What facilities there are. Once the withdrawal date has passed, a list of players and a thumbnail photo of each of the Brits and a little bit about them. And local county / regional offices could do more with their Facebook pages, promoting events in their regions and running regular updates about home players.
It's just that the lack of promotion tennis gets outside of the grass season is a particular bug bear of mine - there's just so much more could be done with so little extra effort.
