Rotten draw for Mr Storrie; decent one for Ms Swan (helps to be seeded!)
Purely on seeding and ranking terms, Ryan has the the JWR 38 and seed 16, and Katie has the JWR 47, who appears to be not far out of the girls' 16 seeds.
So purely on these terms when a non seed would in theory be due to face one of the 16 seeds in the first 2 rounds not much difference in their opponents and arguably hence unluckier for Katie being a seed.
Disclaimer : I have just looked at seedings and junior rankings so I have left myself open to it being pointed out how otherwise wonderful Mr Shapovalov is
Katie and the Canadian girl, seeded 2nd, lost their R1 doubles match, 10-6, in the MTB
Maybe not a surprise if this was their first match together; if they do gel and continue their partnership they may be a useful pairing going forward though
I'll stand by the rotten draw for Mr Storrie statement. Shapovalov is 16; was in the winning junior Davis Cup team, more impressively (given the age differentials) won the junior doubles at the US Open this Autumn, and (ditto) did quite respectably against Mr Salisbury and Mr O'Hare in doubles last week. With that background, I would be very (very) surprised if he were not a top 10 junior in the near future. That's not saying he'll win today; his singles record is a little spottier ... but it's not a great draw.
Detiuc served for the match at 6-5 but was broken (to 15 I think). Meanwhile 4th seed Usue Arconada, who could have overtaken Katie, has just lost to Jaqueline Cristian
