The wind played a big part last night putting even more pressure on the second serve it was almost easier to return rather than be on service. Same for both players but hopefully Melbourne will be calmer and Jo get into her game early.
Solid opener from Heather
A bit touch and go at the start, but thereafter as comfortable as I would have expected - unless it's clay, Pereira can't play.
Our 4 representatives are in doubles action tomorrow, but Heather's R2 singles must be on Wednesday.
Updated Rankings
R1: Heather WATSON (GBR) 53 defeated Teliana PEREIRA (BRA) 46 6-3 6-0
R1: Johanna KONTA (GBR) 49 lost to Dominika CIBULKOVA (SVK) 37 [3] 6-7(6) 5-7
One of those occasions where the lower ranked player winning was to be expected - still the scoreline Heather achieved is impressive and continues an encouraging start to 2016 for her.
Tough one for Jo having set points in both sets but she had much worse luck in the draw than Heather. Last autumn's great run came off the back of Jo playing lots of matches, so maybe she will need a few more to really get going again.
Heather looked fantastic in Perth ie someone who will give even the top players a fright and in that form I would expect her to be playing as a top 30 player and to push anyone outside the top 20 to the limit , always good to polish off the number 4 seed regardless of their favoured surface
I'm sure Jo will be gutted as she had chances to win. Just shows how far she has come when everybody is disappointed about her losing narrowly to WR37.

Well done Hev
Yes, looking good for Heather and hopefully she will polish off the number 4 seed when she plays her in R2
