RE: Australian Open Qualifying - Melbourne, Australia - Hard

That is certainly a big disappointment after such an amazing week Naomi had last week. It looks from the stats that Naomi's serve was not firing today and when that happens she is always going to struggle.

Top 100 will be her next big goal and with few point to defend she should get there, and hopefully sooner rather than later.

Mess. My spidey sense was tingling when I saw the draw but thought she'd get one win.

Shame, opportunity squandered after playing well in Auckland.

Sounds like she played extremely poorly.

Dust down, move on, and attack the next one. Looks like she is off to Maui, doesn't get much better than that!

On the men's thread, Contant says it was cold and windy in Melbourne today.  Naomi is so serve dependent that the weather could well have played a part.

Wasn't expecting that :(
Naomi's serve not working so well by the looks of it and presumably by the end Lim was reading it well too.

Yes, despite coming from Stockport, Naomi would have much preferred yesterday's bright sun and 40 degree heat.

"Windy" would've played havoc with her high ball toss :(

Very tough for Naomi re the wind. Pity

Same for both players though so can't be used as an excuse.

It's a probable reason why her usually best weapon was misfiring; not the same for both players if Lim's serve is not a big weapon

Indeed, call it an excuse ( which I don't think would be unreasonable ) or whatever, it is pretty clear that the wind is likely to adversely effect Naomi's ( high ) serve concentrated game, and her serve stats suggest that it did, so unfortunate. Absolutely fair comments.

Unless Lim ( who I don't know ) is similar, the effect of the very windy conditions would not have been the same for both players.

Give the girl a break!

She was defending 10 in Jan. 18 in Feb. 12  in March and 18 in April.

And has got 78.

Not that bad a start - she now has 3 months where it's a shot to nothing - don't expect her to do it all in one go.

I wouldn't call it a 'shot to nothing'.

I would say that Naomi's poor start to 2015 now gives her a really good shot to make significant rankings progress. I am confident that she will, and if she doesn't I am sure that she will be disappointed.

I think sometimes too much comparison is made against previous years, their 'defense', whereas simply the here and now and future prospects interests me more. As a statto, I admit is does interest me re the resulting ranking movements, and I do comment on them, but too much can be made of them. In this case little rankings movement over the coming months would be too little.

And to that extent I agree that last week she had a pretty good encouraging start to the year and, as I said, I do think she was unfortunate to hit such wind in her opening Aussie qualifying match.
