Nice win and a nice rankings boost - the aim judging by the recent tweets is top 250

Terrific win given Liam's recent form and his recent loss to the same opponent just three months ago.

I am tempted to say that this was Liam's way of "sending a message" to his next opponent.

Genius.  What other tennis forum could drop a Specials reference into a discussion with such subtlety.

Message to Rudy (Wu Di) - though I confess I couldn't work out the pun either, until theemptyvessels help.

Thought I would make this one a bit harder wink

I originally put a couple of extra clues in but in the end, but decided against it.

Congrats to Empty Vessel on this one biggrin

Nor I.  If the Specials are not a group, but what is it they're called these days (?), a band, I'd still have been none the wiser - way out of my musical comfort zone...

I was stumped !

I'd instinctively gone down the 'message in a bottle' line of thinking (and not even Police's one, but just the old-fashioned 'stranded-on-desert-island' message in a bottle) and - not surprisingly - got absolutely nowhere.

So - hats off to you, emptyvessel - respect !

All credit goes to Bob for spotting the opportunity in the first place, I just had the song in my head as it was playing just the other day on an eighties station I like to listen to.

All I can say is that it went completely over my head! blankstare

Well, that was painful to watch. Di Wu just kept the ball in play for about 50 mins and that was enough to win 1&1. Liam looked completely dispirited at the end and lost for ideas. That wasn't the "fired up", confident Liam that I have seen previously. Overall points were 53/24 in Wu's favour, which just about sums it up.

There seemed to be a lack of penetration on both forehand and backhand. I know that blasting your opponent off court is not the only way to win a match, but I only remember 1 winner in the entire match. When he was playing well a couple of years ago, the backhand in particular was metronomic and a key to his ability to control the point. Not so on today's performance. I also don't remember him hitting with so much topspin on the forehand, although I may be wrong on that one. Not once did I see him try and flatten it out.

I am a big fan of Liam and will always remain so. From what I saw today however, he needs some coaching input. It's a shame that Hilts isn't out there with him.

OK, so I was looking through old posts today and came across one from SMC1809 in 2013 when Jamie Baker was playing Wu Di in Marseille qualies.  It reads

Would we call him Di Wu or Wu Di (Dee or Die)?? I hoping Woo Dee, so I can use my message to you Wu Di line.

I am sooo unoriginal.  Sorry SMC.  I stole your line.  I even posted in that thread myself about the same match.  #CopyrightInfringement  disbelief

Combination of complete boredom here in Brazil (no TV for a week - it's broken) and also trying to remember which years I went to Marseille. Couldn't remember if I was there in 2013 or not.  Turns out I wasn't.  I went in 2014 & 2015.
