Thanks, Indiana. Sorry for disseminating incorrect information. I'd misinterpreted some of the French commentary, which was focused on the fact that if Mahut had won this match, he would have been number one. Hadn't realised that it was a question of either definitely being number one or its being contingent on others' losses. So the saga continues ...

And since Nicolas Mahut and PHH were knocked out by les Lopez, Melo continues his run at number one.
No, actually Melo as of now remains 8th in running, which is where he dropped to when his title points from last year were taken off.
After the French Open :
1) Melo remains at WR 1 if and only if he and Dodig retain the title.
2) Bob Bryan goes WR 1 if and only if the Bryans win the title.
3) If neither of these pairs win the title Mahut goes WR 1 ( with Jamie at WR 2 ).
Latest 'in running' :
1 Mahut : 7580 - 180 = 7400 + 180 = 7580 - OUT
2. Murray : 7535 - 180 = 7355 + 180 = 7535 - OUT
3. Herbert : 7190 - 180 = 7010 + 180 = 7190 - OUT
4. Tecau : 7450 - 720 = 6730 + 0 = 6730 - OUT
5. Rojer : 7290 - 720 = 6570 + 0 = 6570 - OUT
6. B Bryan : 6870 - 1200 = 5670 + 720 = 6390 - IN SF
7. M Bryan : 6870 - 1200 = 5670 + 720 = 6390 - IN SF
8. Melo : 7590 - 2000 = 5590 + 720 = 6310 - IN SF
re (2) Given the points are the same, what gives Bob Bryan the edge over Mike Bryan ?
The ATP have consistently had Bob ahead of Mike and I believe what does for Mike is the one additional non counting tournament he played with Steve Johnson in Vienna ( lost in R1 to Murray & Peers ) so Bob's points have come from fewer tournaments.
