Week 30 - ATP Masters 1000 - Rogers Cup - Toronto, Canada (hard)

It is over a week since the Davis Cup tie so while the surface change is not ideal he should have flown in in good time and have had some reasonable prep. So does look disappointing so far.

The preparation excuse would have more credence if he'd made a slow start today and lost in two.

Having said that, anyone can lose a tennis match.

This along with his Wimbledon match was really disappointing.

I think sometimes we can be a little prone to making excuses for our players. Maybe the best player on the day won?
Disappointing loss but not the end of the world by any means. At least he still gets 10 points for turning up.

Jesus guys, it's one disappointing loss. You'd think he was on a terrible losing run the way some are going on.

It happens. Murray's had some shocking losses over the years. Players have off days. Let's see how he does in his next tournament.

Let's not forget too that Kyle didn't even start playing tennis till he was 10. To go from complete beginner to 67th best player on the planet in 11 years is not too shabby! Yes it's disappointing but it happens, let's not make too much of it just yet. It's one match.

Would love to have seen the match and also to know how fast the courts are playing. Kyle has bags of potential but outside of the fearhand he has several obvious weaknesses in his game which are exacerbated by quicker courts. It is entirely possible that after his opponent had settled into the match he figured out a way to attack Kyle and keep the ball away from his strike zone. I don't expect Kyle to peak for several years yet so no need to panic certainly.

All folk have generally been saying is it's disappointing ( as you actually did! confuse ), nothing more, surely not unreasonable. As you say it happens, and I don't expect Kyle to be some sort of machine. That doesn't stop it appearing to be a disappointing loss.

I can waffle enough without feeling I need to add some elaborate context that largely doesn't change a simple statement.

Jesus Christ

Diez played a lot better than some are giving him credit for here.

Kyle not great admittedly but that was partly down to diez.

A match he should've won but everybody at his age loses matches like that.

Diez been doing very well all year, definitely under ranked.

The courts in Toronto tend to be quite quick but not overly so. Certainly not as quick as Cincinnati.

Obviously a very disappointing result but almost certainly a blip.

I notice that young Shapovalov has dumped Kyrgios out as well. Can't say I'm surprised. I caught a part of the match on TV here and Kyrgios was in "I don't really care" mode. He was simply racing through his service games as quickly as possible and trying to serve Aces on 2nd serve - hence his 18 DFs in the match.

How fortunate we are to have one of the world's top-ranked young players who, if he occasionally loses unexpectedly, will doubtless learn from the match and use it to come back stronger. Imagine being an Australian, with your two top young players gifted with talent and to spare ... and deeply ambivalent about using it to the best of their ability.

As Andy said at Queens, we need to give Kyle time and space to develop.

I must admit I am disappointed, but in the bigger picture, it's only one loss. Not (yet?) a habit.

I think you know full well which comments I was referring to.

I didn't actually, and looking back again I can I think just see one post that you might have been thinking about.

However your wording above suggested a more general criticism of posters' reactions, whereas as I indicated they generally said no more than yourself. Basically disappointing.

Anyway let's hope that it is indeed a blip and we can be saying much more positive things about Kyle soon enough again.

It's been a good tournament for the underdog so far hasn't it? A lot of lower-ranked players downing their superiors.
