At 40-30 to her Kostyuk frames an overhead wide from right on top of the net. But Jodie surrenders the next two points pretty easily and this time it's a bit frustrated Jodie that returns to her chair, *4-5
I like the way Ms Appleton seems to improve as matches go on - don't know whether that's the sign of an intelligent player who works out opponents' games or not, never having seen her: is that the case? Anyway, well done to her. Reaching a GS QF is an accomplishment. Andreescu is a tough draw, though, in the next round.
In the doubles, (5) McNally & Subhash (USA/USA) d (1) Appleton & Burrage (GBR/GBR) 6-4 6-3. Don't know Subhash, but the young McNally has been on the horizon for a while.
Emily and Jodie the no 1 seeds were defeated 4-6 3-6 by the no 5 seeds. Emily can now concentrate on her singles
Ali and her German partner bowed out to the no 3 seeds 4-6 6-1 3-10
Finn Bass and his American partner went out to the no 4 seeds 6-3 0-6 2-10
Jodie played well but unfortunately couldn't hold throughout.
Emily, what a comeback from 6-0 down in the first set.
Jodie and Emily in the doubles, close, 6-4 6-3, they fought.
Ali and her partner played a great match against no 3 seed winning the 2nd 6-1, unfortunately losing in the end 10-3 in match tiebreak, wouldn't say they "bowed out".
*didn't catch the boys doubles or singles matches

I don't know what the issues were in Emily's match in that first set since it was later before I started watching any of it, it being on at the same time as Jodie's.
There was nothing I saw about her opponent's game that looked as if it might have proved particularly problematic, but for whatever reasons it turned. In the final set Emily simply looked the better all round player with again great athleticism.
The article that someone posted recently about Emily App said they were working on her starting her matches better. So maybe it's nothing really to do with the opponent, just her.
I've seen her play three times live but never really noticed it as an issue (although once was really ages ago and barely counts, and once I don't think I was there at the very start anyway).
