Boys & Girls: Australian Open, hard - Grade A (Weeks 3/4)

Yay, Emily wins 0-6 6-3 6-3

The last game saw a very lucky net cord for her at *15-30 and then good serving to get her past a couple of BPs and over the line.

Jodie in a spot of bother though at 1-3* final set, so turning my attentions back there ...

Big hold for Jodie for 2-4* and one that certainly frustrated Kostyuk.

Oh and I see has broken for *3-4 when I wasn't watching.

And in just a super long game, containing excellent play from both players, Jodie holds for 4-4* and Kostyuk is fraying at the edges.

At 40-30 to her Kostyuk frames an overhead wide from right on top of the net. But Jodie surrenders the next two points pretty easily and this time it's a bit frustrated Jodie that returns to her chair, *4-5

And then Kostyuk evidently broke in fairly quick fashion to wrap up the match as it was all over when I looked back.

Kostyuk wins 6-7(5) 6-1 6-4

Well done to her. Pity, but well played Jodie.

Guess that's pretty much it for tonight's tennis

Jodie 7-6(5) 1-6 4-6

Just as Jodie seems to be getting on top she starts overhitting again and giving the points away with unforced errors.

I like the way Ms Appleton seems to improve as matches go on - don't know whether that's the sign of an intelligent player who works out opponents' games or not, never having seen her: is that the case? Anyway, well done to her. Reaching a GS QF is an accomplishment. Andreescu is a tough draw, though, in the next round.

In the doubles, (5) McNally & Subhash (USA/USA) d (1) Appleton & Burrage (GBR/GBR) 6-4 6-3. Don't know Subhash, but the young McNally has been on the horizon for a while.

Emily and Jodie the no 1 seeds were defeated 4-6 3-6 by the no 5 seeds. Emily can now concentrate on her singles
Ali and her German partner bowed out to the no 3 seeds 4-6 6-1 3-10
Finn Bass and his American partner went out to the no 4 seeds 6-3 0-6 2-10

I managed to watch all girls matches played.

Jodie played well but unfortunately couldn't hold throughout.

Emily, what a comeback from 6-0 down in the first set.

Jodie and Emily in the doubles, close, 6-4 6-3, they fought.

Ali and her partner played a great match against no 3 seed winning the 2nd 6-1, unfortunately losing in the end 10-3 in match tiebreak, wouldn't say they "bowed out".

*didn't catch the boys doubles or singles matches

I don't know what the issues were in Emily's match in that first set since it was later before I started watching any of it, it being on at the same time as Jodie's.

There was nothing I saw about her opponent's game that looked as if it might have proved particularly problematic, but for whatever reasons it turned. In the final set Emily simply looked the better all round player with again great athleticism.

The article that someone posted recently about Emily App said they were working on her starting her matches better. So maybe it's nothing really to do with the opponent, just her.

I've seen her play three times live but never really noticed it as an issue (although once was really ages ago and barely counts, and once I don't think I was there at the very start anyway).

Subhash beat Emily in the last 16 of the Mexico grade A, so a worthy opponent!

L16: (4) Emily Appleton, age 17 JWR 12 (WR 752) beat (14) Yuki Naito (JPN), age 15 JWR 25 (WR 825) 0-6 6-3 6-3

L16: (6) Jodie Anna Burrage, age 17 JWR 14 (UNR) lost to (11) Marta Kostyuk, age 14 JWR 17 (UNR) 6-7(5) 6-1 6-4

QF: (4) Emily Appleton, age 17 JWR 12 (WR 752) vs (7) Bianca Andreescu (CAN), age 16 JWR 32 / JCH 3 at age 15 (WR 294)

Looks a tough one indeed. All the best, Emily.

As above, all doubles interest over at the QF stage.
