Got there in the end!

*****

L16:  (Q) Kyle Edmund WR 50 vs (5/WC) Gilles Simon (FRA) WR 32 (CH = 6 in January 2009 - his ranking also equals his age)

Is that his current ranking or his CH ranking wink

Decent win from Kyle. Having sat through the match between Monteiro and Evo in Barcelona, it was clear that Monteiro, when on fire, can be very good indeed. But he struggled to maintain that form and cracked under pressure. Didn't see today's match but perhaps the 1st set was just another example of that with Monteiro going for everything and getting it. Pleasing that Kyle was able to hang in there and turn it around in the end.

Also, I seem to remember someone posting here (was it Indiana - haven't had time to search) commenting on Kyle's streak of not being able to win having lost the 1st set. That run has been ended today.

If Kyle is playing well, Simon is beatable. Go Kedders.

  Current, of course.

I see that all three of Kyle's fellow qualifiers have beaten their first round opponents (Elias did for Albot in three, Chung Young in two & Kicker Brown, also in two).  I hope Kyle doesn't let the side down!

Bloody 'ell!  Kicker's now beaten the odious Kyrgios (4) by 2-6 6-4 6-2!

The draw here is getting very top heavy now and unfortunately Kyle is in the top half.

Players remaining in the draw (some at L16 and others in QF):

Top Half

Raonic
Istomin
Elias
Del Potro
Berdych
Chung
Edmund
Simon

Bottom Half

Basilashvili
Kicker
Thompson
Khachanov
Berlocq
Tsonga

And Tsonga has not played that much recently and so is likely to be vulnerable. He has only had two matches on clay this year, losing to Mannarino in Monte Carlo and then beating Kuznetzov in Madrid before giving a walkover to Ferrer.

The march of the qualifiers goes on with Elias now taking out Del Potro. Let's hope Kyle can continue the trend. His match is next up.

Was about to make a similar comment myself, Bob, as I've just been checking the results so far, but you beat me to it.  wink

Yep that was the guy who has commented more than once on Kyle's losing streak after losing first sets. Hopefully that shuts him up for a while and well done, Kyle

Kyle had several BPs at 4-4* in the 2nd but couldn't convert. In the end, Simon takes the set 7-5 and we are into a decider.
