Week 39 - Great Britain F6 ($15,000) - Barnstaple (hard - indoor)

Yes, I actually read it as two unranked players because in my mind that is what CD meant so that managed to overide the err actual word.

Makes sense now - don't worry I'm two glasses of merlot down and the rest of the bottle beckoning!

I saw some pictures from Barnstaple and it looks like a car dealership is sponsoring the event. The money is not in the prize money, so I assume the LTA are pocketing the cash to subsidise the event.

Rare for TWO unseeded doubles players to make the final - well done to Ryan P and Rob.

I'm probably being stupid CD but isn't an unseeded pair by definition two unseeded doubles players?! Or am I getting the wrong end of the proverbial stick?

Nobody's being stupid - CD just meant to say two unranked players, I think. i.e. It's not that unusual for one unranked player to make a doubles final but they're usually playing with a good (ranked) partner at the time.

 Thanks, steven.

Lordy, how hard is it not to get your words mixed up, CD???

And I didn't even have Jon's merlot to blame (although something similar came later on - and I was probably talking UTTER drivel by that time, couldn't even get the word 'tennis' right. Although maybe I was actually more lucid??? Nice thought......)

Barrère broke to lead 3-1, but an immediate Farquharson break back.
He's just broken the Frenchman again for *6-5.

That puts Tom on 68 points.  The current WR 500 is on 69 points.  So he might sneak in, but as long as he keeps playing it is only a matter of time.

Congrats to Tom for two great weeks.

Well, as aid, I do hope young Florian, unranked in juniors or adult, and playing his first ITF tournament, having lost in QR1, is very grateful to Oli

That gives guaranteed British interest in the doubles final in the top half.
And hopefully Luke J and Rich Gabb will now close out the other QF and ensure the same for the bottom half.

How do I sign up to play with a pro like Florian did? Sounds like fun batting a ball back over the net. Reckon I could win a round or two....

Following Oli's tweet, and a bit of sleuthing, I've now figured it out - Florian is a pupil of Oli's The Garden Court tennis academy. Which makes sense as to why he played with Oli.

Oli is listed as Florian's coach on his US college application (along with another guy, presumably from Dukes Madows which is listed as Florian's club). And Oli also wrote his testimonial and reference. (NB Florian also lists that he's got 10 A*s at GCSE)

Golding is rightly very proud of helping another of his players get a foot on the ladder.

Well done to him as a coach, as well as a player.

smile smile smile  Oli is still only 23... I have a son that age too... and I am incredibly impressed by how much Oli has matured in the couple of years he took off. Good luck to him whatever he does now. I'd like to see him play more tennis, but he is not going to do that at the sacrifice of his family or his other career activities now, such as his academy... and that's as it should be. So, even though I'd love to see him gain a really competitive ranking again, I'm not sure that's going to happen.
