The Next Gen ATP finals are being held in Jeddah this week & will be for four more years.   In a lengthy article on the BBC News site, Russell Fuller considers the likelihood that the WTA Finals will eventually end up there.  Tini ain't happy...

It seems that the Saudis ain't happy about Tini's & Chris Evert's opposition to the proposed staging of the WTA Finals in their country.

Once upon a time, someone (I have absolutely no recollection who), dubbed her "Tini Linguine" & I assume that it's a shortened form of that.  I don't remember its being bandied about in her heyday, more when she was in the twilight of her career, but even that predates my engagement with any kind of message board & that's where such trivia tend to make their mark/catch  on.

In a move that is "almost certainly financially driven", the WTA will not be renewing its contract with the Saudis when it expires at the end of this year, cf. the second half of Tom Kershaw's article about Jack Draper in today's Times.

I wasn't sure where to put this as we don't have historic threads as, well, Brits don't usually qualify!

As folks know, the WTA Finals in Saudi got transferred to Indian Wells this year as a one off venue, next month. 

From 2027 onwards, Charlotte will be the venue for three years, indoor at the Spectrum, where Charlotte plays NBA. Due to the basketball, the event will shrink to a 5 day event. The WTA are consulting with players on the format from next year as the current round robin would make it 4 singles and 4 doubles each of 5 days with players playing everyday. Clearly that won't work. 

Whether it will slim down to a smaller field (6 singles?) or maybe they will go for a straight knockout? maybe a singles field of 12 in a knockout over 5 days and reduce doubles to say a 6 pair field?

anyway, the format will stay as it has been for this season in IW but change almost certainly from next.
