Jo breaks for 6-2 *4-2.

She has converted 2/11 BPs in the second set.

This match is on Court 2. Centre Court has 6 matches today, featuring in order Svitolina, Kvitova, Halep, Wozniacki, Ka Pliskova and Ostapenko. Not bad if you want to sit and watch the current leading ladies.

 That is really promising for Jo, clearly despatching someone at WR 29. Lets hope she is turning a corner courtesy of getting some confidence back, maybe from Fed Cup

Good signs of an evening keel for Jo's form
Hoping for a match against Kerber, because Angie is the most watchable player on tour, and though I hope we win, I don't mind so much if we have lose to her and the match is the usual great spectacle.

With Fed Cup in mind, if we neded any timely reminders about how dangerous the Japanese doubles can be, Japanese doubles numbers 2 & 5, Ninomiya & Kato (WR38 & 57, respectively) just teamed up here to thrash Latisha (Yung Jan) Chan & Hlavackova (WR1 & 6, respectively), 6-1 6-3.
Not to be taken at all lightly.

And Kerber it is, beat Stosur 6-4 6-1

H2H: 2-1 to Kerber. Kerber won 7-5 6-2 in the Aus Open 2016 SF and 6-1 6-2 in the Rio Olympics 2016 QF. Jo won 6-3 6-4 in the Eastbourne 2017 QF.

I see Ostapenko lost to Buzarnescu, who is a player I'd never heard of before! What's her background, anyone know her at all? Apologies for my ignorance!

Yeah, she was the top seed in the recent Midland 100k and beat Naomi there in the first round week before last smile

This was their second meeting actually. First up she beat Naomi 7 years ago in a 25k in Turkey.

Her schedule and wins have at least been mentioned in passing on the forum, compared to some other schedules, though she looks a kind of one off in how she has so dramatically burst through in ITFs and now at higher levels. Having at that time had a look at her results I kind of look out for her now.

She is a 29 yo Romanian who has been flying up the rankings. From last June to the end of the year she won 6 ITF titles at 60K or above plus a 25K title. This year she has already been runner up in a WTA International in Hobart, having reached a WTA International SF from qualifying in October. Was fairly decisively beaten in R1 at the Australian Open by some Wozniacki character.

She is at a CH 43 and live rankings up to #39.

Edit : but above all she beat Naomi in the Midlands 100K two weeks ago on the way to the SF

Like Johanna, bit of a late bloomer as a pro. Good junior JCH4 - in Wozniacki group.
Spent almost a decade in the 150-250 range without breaking through; couple of lengthy injuries curtailed her really (shoulder, and latterly knee).
Then, since start of 2017, has just been playing regularly healthy, though the left shoulder is permanently heavily strapped, and everything is working. She's rocketed up the rankings, into top100, and now top 50.
That rise came mostly from big wins on the ITF - she won 6 titles at $60K or above in 2017. She won a frankly ridiculous 65 matches in 2017 (her record was 65-19, 77%); for comparison, Johanna won 40, and the leading Brit won 41; 2017 year end #1, Halep, won 47 matches in the year.
She also plays a lot still in French Club leagues.
She also made a first WTA final this year, in Hobart (lost to Mertens).
Primarily defensive, or passively offensive, putting the ball where the opponent isn't, but not going for lines, preferring to hit three times, each an inch further across and wait for the opponent to err. She won't be posting 50 winner matches any time soon. Comfortable all over the court, and on any surface (maybe not grass?). Doesn't do anything outstanding, but frustrates opponents by making them do what they're least comfortable with.
Can beat herself with bad attitude/body language etc.

thank you - I didnt anticipate such a mine of information, I will now follow her next match with added interest! There are of course 3 Romanians in the last 16, good tournament for them
