Doubles Top 10, with rankings and best titles

25/CH21 Olivia Nicholls Two WTA500 titles with Tereza Mihalikova

Over the last three or so years I have seen all of the above play live except Emily W-S (who I did see play singles at Surbiton !). Highlights include Liv and Lissy beating Harriet and Heather, and Harriet and Greet Minnen beating Lissey and Freya.

Our top three are well ahead of the others in my opinion and I expect Maia to overtake Liv in due course. Harriet would also climb the rankings if she concentrated on doubles. Like Heather, she seems to play better when alongside another player.

Liv has improved since she ended her partnership with Lissy and her serving and returning are much better. Tereza seems to be an ideal partner and if they had been a little luckier with the draws at the big tournaments would be higher ranked. At the moment they are 8th in the race to the tour finals, with the winners of the three slams so far all above them, so provided a lower ranked pair don't win the USO and they keep picking up points they could well be there, although it is all very close.

Maia continues to improve. Her serve appears to be more accurate and her net-play is outstanding. She is very quick on her feet, fast reactions and good overhead and volleying. If only she played more often with Harriet - let's see how they do in the USO !

Of the remaining players, Millie and Emily A are a bit younger and play more singles but have the potential to climb higher. Maddie seems to have plateaued for now and her results since Ilkley have been disappointing.

I'm not sure what to make of Freya and Eden. They can have good results and win titles, but I wasn't that impressed with the play of either of them at Roehampton in April, even though they won the title and subsequently three more out of the six they played.

That leaves Emily W-S who continues to play and enjoy her tennis, but is unlikely to get back to her CH.

thanks TA - so you see Maia overtaking Liv in due course. If Liv/Tereza played Maia and (anyone, but let's say Harriet) right now, who would you expect to win most times out of ten? I am guessing Maia and Harriet? Which makes it a shame they aren't together more often and in the running themselves for a spot in Indian Wells in November

I think Maia and Harriet would be a fair way off making the tour finals. They'd have to play a lot of tournaments together to get the 2000+ points over the year. Liv and Tereza on top form should beat Maia and Harriet most of the time, but all teams have a bad run (or draw) at some point.

While yes it won't be happening while Harriet is still so concentrated on her singles, I saw Jon as wondering how things might pan out in the future if they actually did play much more often together. And then just maybe they would prove better than Liv & Tereza ( and Maia individually move ahead of Liiv ) though you still think no?

I think the comparison between Liv and Maia is difficult. Liv has only played in 3 tournaments under WTA500 level this year, 2 of them being WTA125s in second week of clay court WTA1000s. Because of this the level/ranking of opponent Liv is facing are generally much higher than Maia. It will be really interesting to see how Maia fares against Top 20 opponents who tend to be more well established pairings.

You've nailed it adz. Maia needs to win quite a few matches to get the ranking to enter the higher tournaments. The players contesting the other SF in Monteray this week are all ranked higher (23 to 41) so whoever she meets in the final will be a good test.
