Week 23 ITF ($100k) - Surbiton, Grass

After a good start, Katy has just lost 4 games in a row as Riske gets into the match. *3-5

Katy lost the first set 7-5 and fell away in the second against the best grass court player in the tournament.

Onwards and upwards! Wonder how she would fare against Jo?

Maybe we'll find out next week...

Not just yet biggrin Gabi's up against Conny Perrin next who won in 3 today against lucky loser Nadja Gilchrist. Without blob's stats I don't know for sure, but suspect this is the first time Gabi has beaten two sub 200 players in a row. Conny is WR 193 so gives Gabi a chance for 3 in a row. She needs more wins against this level of player I would hazard, before preceding on to compete more regularly with players within the top 75. She needs the progression, as does Katie B and the other 3 in her cohort.

Plenty to compete for between them, and it will be interesting to see if any of them can make a really big step up this grass season. Katie B is still higher ranked than Gabi, even if Gabi is seen as the favourite to make the move first.

She did it at Manchester last year when she beat Kerkhove (192) in R32 and Zanevska (121) in R16

Ok, that's good too know, so she definitely needs to go one better against Conny then to extend her current run to 3 biggrin

Shame for Katy but much improved from their last result and Riske is a great grass court player.

Cracking win for Gabby. QF is very winnable as Perrin isn't exactly the best grass courter going.

Pity for Katy but yes that was a tough one.

Our GB ranked 6, 7 and 8 are very close in the live 11/08 rankings. I can agree the current openerarankings figures :

Katy D  247 points
Katie S  247
Harriet  234

Katie S of course plays Harriet in R2 here, with a win for Harriet taking her to 246, even tighter. Or of course a win for Katie S taking her to 259. And maybe still more for the winner of that encounter.

Katy D is the only one of the 3 with points due off next week for the 18/06 rankings, with 13 ( net 8 ) to come off.

Not much success for the British women in the doubles today, it's only Laura that goes through - and up to 102 in the live rankings. One more win and she will be the 4th British woman in the top 100 doubles rankings after Anna Smith (50), Heather (67) and Naomi (73)

The other two matches were tight affairs but went the wrong way. Tara playing with a broken little finger today.

QF: Monique Adamczak/ Laura Robson (AUS/GBR) [1] 151 (47+104) beat Asia Muhammad/ Ingrid Neel (USA/USA) 379 (146+233) 6-2 7-694)
QF: Tara Moore/ Conny Perrin (GBR/SUI) 375 lost to Jessica Moore/ Ellen Perez (AUS/AUS) [3] 188 (80+108) 6-7(0) 5-7
QF: Harriet Dart/ Katy Dunne (GBR/GBR) 366 lost to Priscilla Hon/ Fanny Stollar (AUS/HUN) [2] 178 (96+82) 3-6 7-6(4) 10-4

SF: Monique Adamczak/ Laura Robson (AUS/GBR) [1] 151 (47+104) vs Jessica Moore/ Ellen Perez (AUS/AUS) [3] 188 (80+108)

Looked a good effort in the first set from Katy and she was in a good position a few times at 3-1 and 5-5 30-0 or 15. Shame to lose 8 games on the spin, but still good to get a win here, even if it was against someone who she should be beating.

She won't be thinking of this now, but I suppose indirectly, losing to Riske would have been preferable to others because if Riske, Brengle, Wickmayer or even Taylor takes this title then there won't be a Surbiton winner WC opening up at Wimbledon, whereas if it is a Fett, Hon, Ahn etc. who ends up winning, then while not guaranteed, they may well get one, possibly at Katy's expense.

We will stick with the original in regard Kyle/Cam, but Gabi and Heather I will upgrade.

I am interested in why you feel Cam will out rank Kyle, I see potential for both to improve and do really well with good ATP tour careers, indeed I would love be to see them play more doubles together, but where do you see Cam finding an edge that will take him past Kyle. Gaby and Heather I understand and I think it will be a tussle that will hopefully motivate both. The Cam Kyle prediction much less objective.

Pretty much agree Oakland. By very different routes to get there I think we have similar thoughts on where Kyle is now. He is a top 20 ranked player, generally on the up. And while one can discuss / argue re the merits of particular specific rankings to me by May next year I would be very surprised / disappointed if Kyle was not top 30 and very pleasantly surprised if Cam was. So just in that I already have Kyle staying clear of Cam and I don't think it will be too close. Yes, interested in where Jaggy sees that as closing up and indeed switching round. Overestimating Kyle,  underestimating Cam, a bit of both?

Having stated my thoughts re Heather vs Gabi before and that was Hev still ahead next May, I'll leave it at that for now. But suffice to say their differing form makes that one more open to question this year / next year. Though currently Gabi's looked on as reatively great year doesn't have her that far ahead of Hev's looked on as relatively poor year in live race points ( 309 to 281 ) so we shall see. Hope they both add many more.
