Weeks 27 & 28 - The Championships, Wimbledon - men's singles (grass)

I thought Kyle put on a professional and workmanlike performance today without really hitting the heights too much in any area - except his serve which was absolutely top notch. But as he said afterwards, this was only his 2nd appearance on Centre Court and his first win on that court, so the occasion was a big one for him, despite the lower ranked opponent.

The match against Djokovic in Madrid will have no bearing whatsoever on the R3 match here, other than it might give Kyle a bit more belief. Djokovic is looking much better than he did back then and the surface is more in his favour so he will start as a big favourite. All this is assuming he doesn't withdraw with a leg injury. He didn't look to good at the end of his match today.

Now schedulers, what are you going to do about not clashing with a certain England v Sweden football match on Sat ?

Good for Kyle to get another match in on Centre Court if the Djokovic match is scheduled there as well.

Now needs to bring some of the much more positive looking energy he has displayed this year to that match and get the Centre Court crowd very firmly and enthusiastically behind him. Embrace it.

I get the feeling he will actually be a lot more relaxed on Saturday than he was today.  As you say, hopefully more fired up too.

Seeds dropping like flies again today. A total of 16 out now in the first two rounds. Today's fallers include, Cilic, Schwartzman, Shapovolov, Dzumhur. Zverev not having it all his own way either at 1 set all against Fritz, so the upsets might not be over yet.

Yep these seeds definitely need less protection in the draw

England on at 3 Saturday.... I see a clash happening here if Wimbledon aren't sensible. In fact not really sure they can avoid it!

Zverev down 2 sets to 1. 15 left in 3Rd Round. Crazy.

Given all the hoo-ha reported today that the AELTC approached FIFA about the impending clash of the men's singles final with the kick-off time of the World Cup final (which FIFA apparently brought forward for some reason I've yet to see explained & is now displaying its usual intransigence - Russian plot?), I wouldn't bet on it!  disbelief

A real shame Clarke lost to the odious Gulbis .

A great effort hopefully Gulbis gets sent packing in the next round.

No such luck:  he proceeded to beat Dzumhur (27) in five sets, but will come up against Sascha Zverev or Taylor Fritz in the third round...

There's an article about him in the main news section of today's Times under the heading, "Wimbledon's very petulant playboy gets the first fine".  It's for his "erratic" behaviour during the match against Jay:

Gulbis - ten years [Jay's] senior - snapped at the ball boys and girls, told spectators to "shut up" and swore to himself during the match on Tuesday.

It was a typical performance from a player dismissed as a "trustafarian" who has been repeatedly criticised by commentators for wasting his talent  in pursuit of a playboy lifestyle.

The reporter, David Brown, makes the point that Jay "acted impeccably" & that "the £39,000 he made for reaching [sic - did he not know/check that Jay had a wild card?] the main draw has doubled his earnings for the year".

The fine, however, was only $2,000 (about £1,500), which will be a drop in the proverbial ocean for him.  cry

Interestingly, the entire page is devoted to items on some of the less savoury incidents at Wimbledon so far this week.  Apparently, Eugenie Bouchard yesterday refused to apologise for "highlighting a wardrobe malfunction suffered by one of the ballboys".  She reported on Twitter that the hapless lad had his fly undone, that she couldn't stop staring at it when he gave her the balls to serve & wondered whether she should have told him.  She also had the gall to post a picture of him!  Sounds like another obnoxious character!  furious

What appalling behaviour from Bouchard. My nephew was a ballboy at Wimbledon and they work incredibly hard to get there. So many of them are let go along the way. Unfortunately it may count against him as any minor transgression can mean you dont get chosen, at least for show courts. Fancy shaming a young guy like that by actually posting his picture, theyre 15 or 16 for goodness sake. And yet she has so many fans

Poor guy, he will be totally mortified. Bouchard has no idea how much it will absolutely shame him to be picked out this way for something that is so embarrassing for a young guy. Someone should have let him know.. It is really quite cruel of her, and a huge misuse of her power.

Gulbis (definitely his dad!) is mega loaded even without the money from tennis.
