"Massive #respect due to @PaulJubb3 . After winning in Lithuania last week, took 2 flights and a train journey straight after the final, to begin qualies in Slovakia 15K futures the next day...6 matches later he is in the SEMIs after a 6-2 6-4 victory today over the world 928"
Steven is predicting 843 when last week's points go on, and assuming Paul fails to beat Paul, it's looking like around 780 when this week's points go on.
Terrific to see two young Brits fight out such a battle, although split loyalties are always factor. Paul has had an amazing run over the last two weeks and all credit to him for the giant leaps forward that he has made.
But also really pleased for Ewan. I saw him play in Martos and Palma del Rio last year and he has a very solid game. If you ever talk to him, just close you eyes for a moment and listen. You will be convinced that you are listening to a certain Andy Murray.
Congratulations to them both, shame Paul couldn't keep it going purely from the perspective of the length of his run, Ewan will also taking the college bragging rights where Paul has the higher profile, for the time being. Ewan is definitely in a position to change that next year.
Pleased also for Ewan who now as a junior at Tulane has been one of our better college players, the American Athletic Conference is a good standard probably a tier below the five power conferences but Tulane also supplement there schedule with some tough out of conference match ups. I was hopeful he would establish himself in the no 1 slot which he didn't quite manage although doing well in the No 2 (14-7) implying he was being tested most of the time. A win in a 15K might give him the lift to do that, the competition with Constantin Schmidz (#21 nationally in college ranking Ewan finished just the wrong side of 100) up until now has been too much however he (Constantin) has just graduated as one of the most improved seniors in college tennis so a fantastic opportunity for Ewan.
Also a shout out to Tulane's assistant coach ex LSU and Brit Chris Simpson who is in his second year and must have had significant input into the programme as the head coach is also director of tennis and oversees the ladies programme. Tulane have had their best season for some time posting 20 wins (22-7) compared to 8 (8-14) last year, that is some improvement, with the loss of Constantin for the next two years the responsibility to maintain that programme growth should fall to Ewan of course has fellow scot Hamish Stuart to help him out!
