Jo was around 300 points from WR32, so with almost nothing to drop, stands a good chance of making up the gap and getting a seeding for AO.
She'll need to rise to 16 to get a seeding at the Aus open. Grandslams are going back to 16 seeds next year.
No. They voted against it finally. There was a meeting a week ago or so where:
As always, various 2019 Grand Slam Rule amendments and proposals were considered. Specifically, the GSB re-visited its earlier-stated intention to revert to 16 Seeds in 2019. Following a full year of Grand Slam match analysis and feedback from all other constituencies, especially players and broadcast partners, the Grand Slam tournaments have decided there is no compelling reason to revert to 16 seeds.Accordingly, all 2019 Grand Slam tournaments have agreed to continue with 32 seeds in singles."

From four one up in the second set her level of play was embarrassing. Missing open court easy winners , her game fell to pieces . One of the worst passages of play Ive ever seen from a top 50 player.

"Another fairly ugly match from Jo Konta, who lets slip a 4-1 double-break lead in the second set to lose 6-3 7-5 to Donna Vekic in Tokyo. Lost her last two service games to love. So many forehand errors"
Poor Jo, I feel so sorry for her. She really 'had it' for a while in the second set, but something went very wrong, and I thing it was with her rather than Vekic upping her game.
The career of a professional tennis player is short, and there's plenty of time left to make a success out of another career. Professional Tennis is a brutal sport and the player, always under the spotlight and often playing with an injury or two, has somehow got to be totally fearless under severe pressure. Some of us take many years in a normal career to control fears and learn to relax, and work with a clear mindset. I think with Jo, she desperately wants to perform well, and win well, and that is absolutely commendable, but too much of that can get in the way of decision making, shot selection and execution. It appears from the outside, that Jo is unable to break out of this tailspin in her tennis. I don't think she is the kind of character who is prepared to accept mediocrity. There's no point banging your head against the wall, just walk around it and enjoy the space in front of you.
I followed scores till Jo had the double break in the second set, then went underground on the tube. Really thought she might turn the match around. Sad to see the result when my phone reconnected.
On the basis of her performances since Wimbledon 2017 Jo's current ranking in the mid 40's is about right. Has done nothing to suggest she will get back to the level of being seeded in Grand Slams.
