RE: Week 1 - WTA Premier ($1M) - Brisbane, Australia (hard)

Wonderful start to the new tennis year for Harriet... and has a lot of people scrambling already with their prediction rankings! Just 18 points so far for Harriet, but it is more the statement of intent. This month Harriet has a (non-counting) 2 points dropping off for reaching the QF in a 15k in Sharm last Jan. The 18 points are net 10 as will replace 8 points from a 60k in Istanbul last April, so it is still only 2-3 places in the rankings, but it is a wonderful signal of her preparation and intent for this coming year.

Please can you explain why the 8 points coming off from a 60k last April will need replacing.  I am struggling to understand the new system.

It's not really the new system, it's how it's been for a while. You basically count 16 tournaments for the year, so you could play 16 events or 30odd, but only 16 would be recorded. Harriet's lowest counter was 8, so while she's not defending anything, anything she adds needs to replace her lowest counter. The 8 dropped would be saved (for 12 months) and that could be added back when the German 25k W and Japan 25k F points come off (if she didn't add anything better before then).

In this case nothing to do with the new system. These 8 points were simply her 16th ( bottom ) existing counter.

So her points this week replace that 8 pointer and a 9 pointer will now be her bottom counter.

ie. as Ace said in more detail.

Do we think Heather and/or Jo/Harriet will be in the doubles draw?

Thank you that makes absolute sense.  I should have thought of that.

Andrea with a comfortable hold 0-1

Harriet holds to love 1-1

Harriet with an early break for *2-1

3 times Petkovic forces bp but HD saves each time then holds 3-1*

Both players with first serve percentages in the 60s, scoring well when they get their first serve in but struggling on 2nd. *3-2

A first ace for Harriet as she holds to 30 4-2*

Quick hold for AP *4-3

5 first serves as Dart holds to 15 5-3*

Andrea behind 15-30, takes the next three points *5-4

Harriet broken to 15 serving for the set, despite missing just one first serve 5-5

AP gifts Harriet a break with two dfs in a row from 30-30 *6-5

Harriet with an ace for 30-30, then down 30-40, saves bp, only to df, saves bp again, another bp, saved, set point, 2nd serve no, another set point, got there eventually 7-5

A tight opening set. Both players with high first serve percentages. Harriet not doing as well behind her first serve towards the end of the set.

----

Andrea up 30-15 loses the next three points as Harriet gets the early break *1-0

Harriet holds to 30 2-0*

AP holds to 30 *2-1

Harriet holds from 30-30 3-1*

Andrea holds to 30 *3-2

HD holds to 15 despite landing just one first serve 4-2*

Harriet with 3 bps, Andrea saves two but not the third *5-2

Harriet closes out the match to 15 on her 2nd mp 6-2

Shame there wasn't a stream for this match. Harriet did well behind her first serve for the majority of the contest, only struggling as she twice served for the opening set. A lower first serve percentage in the 2nd set yet held throughout without too much difficulty.

Just 25 points for three super wins. 55 on offer for a 1st round win in the main draw. Last year Harriet got 2 wins against top 100 opponents. She needs one more to beat that during the first week of the season.

What a fantastic start to the season for Harriet - today's win is a career best ranking scalp (and presumably a career best CH scalp too, though I haven't checked) and, having won Oslo 25K in late October to end last season, she has now won 8 singles matches in a row, the last 4 of those all against higher-ranked opponents!

Just woke up, looked on Twitter and saw this and my eyes literally bulged out! Petko double breadsticked Hradecka in the last round!

Well done Harriet!! biggrinbiggrin

Let's hope for a decent R1 draw. Would be great to see her get the rankings boost that she clearly deserves.

Edit - oops, never noticed that her R1 draw had been posted no

Yes, a fantastic win, and a great R1 draw as well. With the last DA being WR49, it could have been a real tough one, but Hon is certainly beatable.

Edit: - match is scheduled for Show Court 1 tomorrow, not before 7am UK time.

Wow, that is some stat! And Steven points out this is Harriet's 8th win in a row having won the Oslo 25k end of last season. What a start Harriet, but it's those MD wins where the real points are now. Next week's live rankings this still only pushes Harriet up to WR 144, up 5 places and net 17 points. But a first round win, against a player who is in fact lower ranked than her, could move her up potentially to around WR 130. Regardless, a real kickstart to the season already, go Harriet!
