Week 2 - WTA Premier ($823k) - Sydney, Australia - Hard

Quirk in the rules there, why should you be allowed to sign in as a LL if you retired in FQR ?
Still, good luck to Jo, she needs some matches.

 Exactly my thoughts.

It's not right, but it happens a few times. I remember Dodin doing similar in one of the Sunshine Double tournaments last year.

That doesn't make it right either! smile The WTA should put a rule in place so that this doesn't happen.

But if you retire because you've got a horrid bug and then the next day feel a lot better (which often happens) why not allow them to sign in as a LL?

Otherwise, they'll just feel obliged to play out the match, hardly touching a ball, making themselves worse, and making tennis look daft.

...because on the day, they lost the match?

Did Jo know before she started the match that she would get into the main draw as a lucky loser as long as she started the match? But who can blame her because why waste energy playing 2 sets when a few games will do to get you into the main draw. It's the fault of the rules and it was common sense for Jo not to waste unnecessary energy. Meanwhile let's see what happens against Kiki Bertens.

You have to be cleared by the tournament doctor to sign in as a LL. All above board and you can forsee many scenarios where it might happen, a bug, a minor fall etc...

There can be 2/3 days between FQR and first R1 matches in WTA events.

And remember flamingo wings, every lucky loser has lost the match on the day. Otherwise you wouldn't be a lucky loser

No, the draw is done at random.

If Jo is fit she will welcome the match practice however she got in. I will be pleased just to see her get through another match safely...

R32: Jo KONTA (GRB) [LL] WR 38 vs Kiki BERTENS (NED) [7] WR 9

And withdrawn

Lucky loser is based on ranking and not a lucky draw. It favours the highest rank down. I reckon Jo must have known before the start of the matcn that as long as she started the match she would get into the main draw. Seemingly she hurt her neck in  the warmup Sensible not to waste energy though. Why play for a couple of hours when 18 minutes will do.

Edit - Jo, as of yet, has not pulled out of Sydney.

Its based on both. The draw is based on the number of LL spots available plus one (2 spots available, the 3 highest ranked losers go into the draw for the LL places)
