Week 2 - Australian Open women's qualifying - hard

Gabi's match may be a little earlier now. Witthoeft has just retired at 1-5, so well head of schedule on C14 already.

Gabi broken to 15 in the opening game 0-1*

Kristie holds to 40 *0-2

An error and a df as Gabi gifts 2 bps then saves them with attacking play, KA with another bp but puts a f wide, this time Gabi awful f error miles long after her serve, saved again with a decent serve, good rally KA earns another bp, foot fault called against Gabi on 2nd serve so a df and another break 0-3*

KA takes control of the rally, dominates then puts a drive volley in the net, big first serve for 30-15, GT careless f just long, Gabi f just long again *0-4

Taylor f just long, GT b wide 0-30, Gabi lands a f 15-30, KA dominates yet puts her f dtl just wide 30-30, unreturned 1st, repeat 1-4*

unreturned 1st, GT b net, KA f cc that Gabi can't handle 40-0, KA b long 40-15, rally *1-5

KA power f that GT can't control 0-15, GT deep 15-15, df 15-30, GT poor f into net 15-40, KA goes for b cc but wide 30-40, KA reaches GT drop shot then puts her b dtl for the set 1-6

---

While I went to get some desert, Gabi broke to 15 helped by at least one, possibly two dfs, then KA broke to love despite four 1st serves from Gabi 1-1

KA careless b long 30-30, GT gets bp but KA saves it with a super inside out f cc winner after a rally 40-40, GT punishes a 2nd serve with a huge f return winner 40-40, another bp for GT, Gabi goes for another big return off a 2nd serve but puts it wide 40-40, unreturned, agg b cc from KA *1-2

KA fails to return a 2nd serve 15-0, Gabi b wide 15-30, KA does her totally dominant yet puts the final shot wide 30-30, GT 40-30, KA dominates again GT can't control a b on the run, Gabi attempts a difficult drop shot cc but puts it in the net 40-A, a good b dtl from Gabi saves bp 40-40, rally ends with soft b error long from GT 40-A, Gabi goes for a big f after her serve but is wide for the break 1-3*

Gabi struggling to get her returns in court, 40-15, KA wild error then holds for *1-4

GT lob just long 0-15, GT b that may have hit the back board before it bounced 0-30, unimpressive KA return 15-30, GT deep shot after a rally 40-30, another GT b that lands miles long 40-40, GT b cc wide 40-A, GT f into the net 1-5*

KA eases to 40-0, GT saves one mp but not the 2nd 1-6

----

I missed the first two games in each set and the camera angle wasn't great help assessing the quality of the play from the far side. Kristie Ahn appeared to dominate more of the points but was guilty of some horrible errors on the final shot. My sense is that Gabi never quite found her rhythm, resulting in too many soft errors. The stats say that while both players had high 1st serve percentages, KA won 74% of her 1st serve points, while GT only managed 40%.

Naomi (N) v Ysaline (Y) Bonaventure

N broken to 15 after only landing one 1st serve, two big f dtl from Y and 2 poor f errors from N immediately after her serve 0-1*

Y ahead 30-0, N fights back to 30-30 with two good points, one a net rally, but a good 2nd serve from Y and a f error from N *0-2

N still struggling to land 1st serves, gets two unreturned 2nd serves and one decent body 1st serve as she holds to 30 1-2*

A df then a couple of wild ground-strokes from Y as she gifts N 15-40, only for N to make a poor blocked return into the net then a b just long, Y holds with a couple of unreturned 1st serves *1-3

N gets 4 unreturned 1st serves for a hold to love 2-3*

N gets to 15-40 while I was busy typing, then a poor b error wide from N, a good b from Y for 40-40, Y with a poor b into the net for 40-A, then a df for the break 3-3

N careless b into the net after her serve for 15-15, ace 30-15, another shocking b into the net after her serve 30-30, an unreturned 2nd serve, then a N drop shot that Y puts wide 4-3*

Easy love hold for Y 4-4

N gets to 40-30 after a N f pass winner after a drop shot then falls to pieces, two negative rallies, one ending with a tame f error into the net, the other point an aggressive f that missed the intended target 4-5*

Y 40-0 N with a stunning f cc winner 40-15 Y b winner for the set 4-6

---

Another poor service game from N yet she holds to 30 thanks to errors from Y 1-0*

Y love hold *1-1

N holds to 15 thanks to four unreturned 1st serves 2-1*

Out of nowhere N plays three high quality points, a rally featuring two N drop shots, a b pass winner, then a stunning b dtl winner for 15-40, Y poor b into the net for the break *3-1

A good 2nd serve, an ace, a df, a long discussion with the umpire after he called a serve wide, N holds to 15 4-1*

Y holds to love while I was typing *4-2

N seems to be striking her first serve a bit harder, starts with a decent b cc, unret, two careless f errors after her serve, then unret, finishing with an ace 5-2

Y ahead 40-15 plays a careless f into the net, N punishes a 2nd serve for 40-40, N f long, Y b pass winner after a N drop shot *5-3

N unreturned 1st 15-0 then a poor f ue net, df 15-30, 2nd serve Y awful f error wide 30-30, two aces to finish the set 6-3

---

Y quick love hold *0-1

Y with a stunning f pass winner for 15-30 but puts a drop shot into the net after a rally for 30-30, lots of 2nd serves but N holds to 40 1-1

Y effortless love hold *1-2

N up 30-0, df, then doesn't do enough on her first groundstroke, allowing Y to hit a f pass winner 30-30, ace 40-30, back to back f slice errors into the net to hand a bp to Y, who fires a b pass winner after N wastes chance to win the point with a b 1-3

Another easy hold for Y *1-4

N broken again. It has been an alarmingly passive performance from her, tons of slice, barely any confidence, seems to be pushing her first serve much of the time, rather than hitting it, 1-5*

N with 2 bps while I wasn't watching, Y saves the first with a f winner then can only find the net with a b off a N slice *2-5

N quickly up 40-0, holds to 15 3-5

Y finishes the contest with an easy hold to love 3-6

---

Naomi had a few spells of impressive tennis in amongst a largely negative, erratic performance, barely any winners from her, unable to land aggressive ground-strokes, spent much of the time slicing and attempting drop shots.

Naomi's first serve deserted her in the third. Shame as that seemed like one of her better performances in recent months. She pulled back one break at the very end but Bonaventure got it over the line

Out 6-4 3-6 6-1 :(
