Well done Harriet. That win is a still a big milestone and more points bagged in this crucial early few weeks of the year before she has to start defending decent scores. Xu hasn't kicked on as expected but is dangerous, and Harriet will need to play much better than she did today.
I have watched Xu (Cairns/Brisbane ITF) and Harriet (BI) play in Australia in the last 4 months. Xu will push Harriet hard but I would fancy Harriet on the basis that she appears to have the mental edge on Xu.
Harriet put in a mature performance overall in Brisbane. Not the most powerful ground strokes but knows how to wear the opposition down.
That is a rather concerning scoreline for Gabi. Ahn is obviously much more experienced and was on the fringes of the top 100 a year ago, but she is currently ranked below Gabi and was coming into this on the back of an 8 match losing streak. I was expecting a close match, but winnable all the same, so to get only 2 games, on a neutral surface, is pretty poor. Seems hard to believe that only 7/8 months ago there was genuine talk across various social media platforms that (while risky) she could have been the #2 behind Jo to take on Japan in the Fed Cup, that seems so far away right now.
Katie S is a 9/2 outsider to beat Bianca later. Might have been different had these been due on first yesterday, but they've given Bianca the best possible chance to be as much recovered as possible, which is fair enough really. If Bianca does advance later (hopefully not) then I'd like her to come through qualifying.
