Not much to say about the 2nd set. Shilin Xu made a ton of errors including 2 dfs in her opening service game of the set, as she was broken to love. Harriet got a lot of unreturned serves and two aces, so didn't need to strike many winners. Both players with the occasional brilliant shot
Watson would probably struggle against most, so I reckon most draws for her would be considered tough. Can't see her beating Martic though.
Makarova hasn't win since August and the US Open. She hasn't played a competitive match in 2019, last match was a 1 and 2 defeat to Ons, pulled out of a tournament before that and lost the previous 2 before that, including Cabrera, so she must have been struggling for form and fitness for a while. It's not Hives, Perez etc. but think there's a good opportunity for her.
I didn't see Jo's recent Brisbane match with Tomljanovic and while that may play on her mind a bit, as she is no longer seeded, it could have been far worse.
I think one will go through, but two won't be beyond them.
The big story with Makarova is that she is having to pick up the pieces from when she and Vesnina split as a doubles team just as they were about to become ranked World Number One.
It sounds like there was a massive bust up coming into a tournament that resulted in neither speaking to each other, let alone playing together, and then they both got new doubles partners (Vesnina for one tournament) before Vesnina then became pregnant later in the year, which given her age has probably put pay to a Makarova re-union in doubles, no matter what happens.
Makarova is now concentrating on the singles a bit more than she was (Vesnina had a much higher ranking than her) as she was in danger of falling out of the top 100, but I think she is generally on the wane, and the break up of her partnership with Vesnina has realistically meant no more Grand Slam finals or titles (they were runner up in quite a few) and I think she is there for the taking, and I feel it is an ideal draw for Katie B.
Martic is something of an unheralded and under-rated veteran, but she often raises her game at Grand Slams and gets a good run in singles, so I guess it is a tough draw for Heather, but not one without hope. I'm not sure about Jo Ko; if the crowd favour Tomljanovic and give her lots of support, then that could be a factor - I think both Heather and Jo have a chance, but tough to call, but I do think Katie B will sail through against Makarova.
Wonder who Harriet will get if she gets through the last qualie against Jorovic; there are some big names to face qualies, including Maria Sharapova.
Sharapova hasn't done that much since her tennis career time out (ban), 1 minor title in 2017 I think and withdrew from her last/start of the year tournament
