RE: Week 2 - Australian Open women's qualifying - hard

Harriet is Watsonesque in scrambling and her ground strokes are very solid.

Fabulous that she has found that capacity to scramble, unlike Hev she remains level headed through the point, more considered and consistent unless she is being over powered. Fantastic result, well earned over the last 2 years of incremental improvement. 2019 offers her a great opportunity to enter and solidify a position in the top 100. What a great morning!!!!

Please just avoid Sabalenka/Pliskova/Svitolina. Sharapova could be fun though

I would have preferred a few of the others but Sharapova it is.

Well done Harriet!! Can't believe how much she's improved in 12 months. Who would have predicted this this time last year?

Didn't see a ball of that match - thrilled for her.

By the way, does anyone know - is she still based in Turkey? There were some faintly disgruntled mutterings about that from the LTA bods last summer.

Who cares what the LTA thinks - they'll still try and take all the glory even if she is based abroad.

Huge congratulations to Harriet and good luck in main draw

She is still with the same coach but I believe she no longer does the bulk of her training in Turkey.  Seems to be trying to work more out of the UK, maybe so she can see more of her family.

And just to confirm that she's back in London

She added: "Last year I had a really good season. I started with a new coach [Goran Marijan]. I was training abroad in Turkey for a year and a bit. This year, we decided to go back to the UK because my coach is full-time with me. We have been working on my game, trying to improve things 5-10%. That makes a big difference when you put it all together. I have been happy I have stuck with it and implemented it in matches. I am getting results for the hard work.

"Goran is an Aussie of Croatian background. We were based in Istanbul but now in London. Istanbul is a cool city."

Adding insult to injury: Katie Swan, who left court in tears and in a wheelchair while suffering back spasms in her #AusOpen QR1, has been fined $5,500 for "first round performance."

She's the fines leader along with Carina Witthoeft, who was fined the same for the same offense.

The fine would presumably mean that organizers deemed Swan unfit to have taken court in the first place, saying she should have withdrawn and given her spot to an alternate.

that feels v harsh - what pay would a first round qualifier get in Australia, that must be a massive chunk of it?

Edit - $15 AUSD
