Boys & Girls: J2 Tunis, Tunisia, hard (Week 5)

Last week Marni Banks drew the top seed in round 1. This time the meeting will be in round 2, if both win their openers (different top seed though - a strong Swiss girl, who got 7 games off the eventual Australian Open winner Clara Tauson last week)

Boys R1 (L32)

Felix Gill v Piotr Pawlak (POL)

(WC) Mohamed Ali Abibsi (ALG) v Joseph White

Girls R1 (L32)

Marketa Panackova (CZE) v Amarni Banks

An abbreviated day's play saw Felix win a first set bagel while Joseph lost his opener 7-5

Brilliant win for Marni - probably a career best in ranking (her opponent is top 50). She is joined by Felix, who has to negotiate a quarter-final against a recent G2 finalist

R2

Felix Gill d. (WC) Zakaria Ben Brahim (TUN) 6-0 6-4
(2) Jaime Caldes (ESP) d. Joseph White 7-5 6-4

QF

Mario Gonzalez Fernandez (ESP) v Felix Gill

Girls R2

Amarni Banks d. (1) Valentina Ryser (SUI) 6-2 6-4

QF

Amarni Banks v Anna Arkadianou (GRE)

Go, Marni !

Indy and I are big fans of hers (well, sort of) after she ran Emma Rad SO close in a match about 3 years ago, losing 4-6 in the third.

Yes, I know, it's rather flimsy basis for fan-ship (and a long time ago, with very young players) but, hey, there are worse things to base it on.....

Felix plays another Spaniard, who benefited from an early retirement in his match, while Marni plays the one remaining girls seed, who wins a high percentage of her matches. They play semis and finals tomorrow, because of rain earlier in the week. And there is further good news to report, as the ITF has reversed the doubles final result

Boys SF

Felix Gill v Alejandro Garcia (ESP)

Doubles F

(2) Breysach/Gill (FRA/GBR) d. Garcia/Mansilla Diez (ESP) 6-4 6-3

Girls SF

Amarni Banks v (4) Selena Janicijevic (FRA)

Marni made it to her first G2 final but couldn't challenge an opponent who cruised through the whole tournament

Boys SF

Alejandro Garcia (ESP) d. Felix Gill 6-4 6-2

Girls SF

Amarni Banks d. (4) Selena Janicijevic (FRA) 6-1 6-1

F

Aubane Droguet (FRA) d. Amarni Banks 6-1 6-0

Well done, Marni. A G2 final. That's smashed her previous best counter.

Aubane is only 16 but made the finals of a 15k a few months ago and is well known in France. (Her brother, Titouan, is one to watch too). Selena J is also a good national player.
