The fact she was able to play in this tournament at all when not able to get into ITF tournaments tells you all you need to know about how stupid the new rankings are. Quite right on taking the chance to play but to be honest she shouldnt be playing at this level. Her opponent could have played blindfolded and nearly won its like Doncaster Rovers playing a team in the champions league.

fed cup week and so many players otherwise detained for they nations always opens up opurtunities like this for some players
at leest they dont still play a wta event in this week of fed cup
the new rankings sure dubious at best but this week and ews here i dont think is all due to that exactly
Yes, I'm no supporter of much of the new transition system but anomolies like unfilled higher level tournaments that low ranked / unranked players could sneak into if they recognised a possible chance and kept their ear to the ground is nothing new and not really to do with that new system.
This instance, as said, much to do with this following a Fed Cup week.

This tournament and the Dubhai one also don't have any(?) local players to give spaces to

Rotterdam atp 500 similarly has a space in Qualies, amazed a Dutch player couldn't have taken it
Spaces not taken in competitions probably either because players have committed elsewhere as they didnt expect to get in or simply because players arent thinking to check as they wouldnt expect to get in. Wouldnt surprise me if some only realise afterwards by someone telling them.
Mind, all this talk about possibly not deserving places, 31 year old Shuko Aoyama, a traditional doubles player currently ranked #651 with a career high of 182 and never been inside the top 300 since mid 2017 is certainly taking her opportunity here. She beat Cirstea yesterday and is currently 5-7 7-6 against Tomljanovic, who has had a good start to the year.
