The story of Wimbledon 2019 so far:

L128:  (30) Kyle Edmund WR 31 defeated Jaume Munar (ESP WR 88 by 4, 4 & 4

L128:  Daniel Evans WR 65 defeated Federico Delbonis (ARG) WR 76 by 6-3 7-6(5) 6-3
L128:  (18) Nikoloz Basilashvili (GEO) WR 16 defeated (WC) James Ward WR 205 by 2-6 4-6 6-4 6-4 8-6  cry

*****

L64:  (30) Kyle Edmund WR 31 vs Fernando Verdasco (ESP) WR 37 (CH = 7 in April 2009)

L64:  Daniel Evans WR 65 vs (18) Nikoloz Basilashvili (GEO) WR 16

L128:  Cameron Norrie WR 49 defeated Denis Istomin (UZB) WR 109 by 2, 4 & 4

L128:  (WC) Jay Clarke WR 166 defeated (Q) Noah Rubin (USA) WR 183 by 4-6 7-5 6-4 6-4

*****

L64:  (WC) Jay Clarke WR 166 vs (2) Roger Federer (SUI) WR 3 (CH = 1 - for the first time - in February 2004)

Should be good experience for the young man...  Nowt to lose, so I hope he won't be (too) overawed.

For completeness:

L128:  João Sousa (POR) WR 66 defeated (WC) Paul Jubb WR 472 by 6-0 6-3 6-7(8) 6-1  cry

Decent Wimbledon debut.

He looks like he's got potential, but he hasn't got the mental toughness yet (just won set 3, and has gone awol mentally in set 4). I hate the way the commies are bigging him up as being 'only' 19 in the way they were Cori yesterday. For me he's not a dead cert for no 1, or anywhere near. However, he IS good, and looks like he could go at least top 100, probably top 50 which isn't to be sniffed at. We have another challenger player

I don't see what the 'only 19' comments have to do with any certainty (or not - obviously not) about being no. 1.

It's just telling the tv audience that he's 'only 19'. Compared to nearly all the other players who are older.

He ran out of steam in that fourth set. But it was a decent match, after the first set where he obviously got eaten for breakfast. There was a lot to like.

Not the result for Paul, but a fascinating vision of what the future could look like. Sousa is a hardened pro with 3 ATP titles to his name so a more than creditable performance.

After the first set Paul gave a good account of himself. Good to be able to watch him play. Lots to look forward to in the future.

The first thing I would say is that there is a lot of physical development to come. He still looks like a kid playing adult tennis - but I don't mean that in a detrimental way. He will get physically much stronger which should give him more cheap points.

As you say, an exciting future awaits.

Plenty of room for improvement, but what an exciting prospect. I believe he will outpace Cam in a couple of years, he's got the skills and determination. And we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that he is still a (very good) college player who was playing a seasoned top 100 pro.

Completely agree with this, he has some real natural athleticism - his speed around the court was impressive. With more experience, a bit more muscle and more of an inclination to go into the net... he'll be up there with Cam. Exciting to see that we could (if all goes well) have a decent selection of players in the 30-100 range with Clarke, Norrie, Edmund, Jubb!

Are you assuming therefore that Murray and Evo will be in the 1-30 range wink

Well.... I'm not too optimistic re Murray's return to singles and for how long that'll last. But I do think Evo will break the top 20 in the next year

I think it was just the way that they were talking about him, in the same way as, ie almost likening him to Cori, who in my eyes is a much bigger talent.

It was a decent match, and he's got a top 100 scalp already, and he'll mature physically and mentally, so I look forward to watching his progress.

I was just going to say the same too, BBC need to wake up and get him on the red button...

I sent them a stroppy message about it. I seem to do that about something every year, and they are showing more Brits, but I missed the first set because they were doubling up and I haven't got broadband.
