All over for Heather

Heather falls away as Kontaveit steps up second set and loses 5-7 1-6.
Still a win to build on for Heather. Doubles still to come.

Heather earned 6 break points to her much higher ranked opponent's 4 in the first set but Heather could only convert 2 against her opponent's 3. From 5-5 in the first set Kontaveit's confidence grew and it was all pretty much one way from then on.

It was that little bit of extra pace on the ball that caused Heather to mistime the ball. Serve was much better though, as 3 consecutive aces shows. Fine margins, as always, and much better on the day than her ranking.

Good to hear in some ways. But then she has been so very much higher than her current ranking and there must be a Heather in there capable of getting quite a bit higher than she is ranked now.

So I have rather mixed feelings when she is judged against her current ranking. But it is where her general play for a while has left her and if she can at least play fairly consistently above that she can maybe start to get somewhere.

I think sadly Heathers level these days is that of Challenger. I know theres isnt technically such a level at womens but even watching her get into the top 50 and win a tournament there was always something missing. Laura on the other hand I feel could always compete with the top players. Heather is a great fighter though but realistically the womens game has improved so much that the top 60 players can all win Slams and Heather just isnt at that level. Her ranking is probably exactly the level she is at.

Agree with comment about Laura competing with the top players. Trouble is that  after 2013 with injuries she has not looked likely to reach that level again.

Wowza well done Coco. Magda is not exactly a grass mug!

Coco v Magda was a really good match. Coco's extra power probably made the difference, and that girl is so quick around the court ! One of the highlights of the day for me, and so glad they switched it to No 1 Court (sorry Seagull, but you had some great matches on 2 anyway). Glad it didn't go the distance though, got home at midnight.

Much better match than the previous one (Wozniacki) which had me nodding off during points - I wouldn't have watched it if I hadn't been there.

I was very impressed with Coco. I thought that Magda's grass court variety would give her more issues than it did, but Coco clearly had a game plan and executed it

Coco is already LR 182. Her CH is 299... A young woman on the move that's for sure. Still only 27th best American though, to show their strength in depth.

The 27th best American whilst only being allowed to play a small amount of tournaments at that too.

Not sure the US men have quite so much depth as their women but they will survive after the Williams sisters retire.
