They've met in Grand Slams twice before (last 32 at Wimbledon in 2016 & the last 64 of the AO earlier this year).  Roger the Lodger won both matches in straight sets.

Has Dan played Roger since he did some hitting with him? It'll be interesting in any case. Well done Dan.

Yes, 47 - but Kukushkin and Thompson may go above him again tomorrow (these two would then meet in the next round)

Kuku can't:  he's just lost to Popyrin in four...

And congrats to Bedene, who put our Paire (the 29th seed) in a fifth set tie-break

And gets Sascha Zverev next up, a player who seems to be modelling his slam career on Nishikori.

by that do you mean plays as many drawn out 5 setters as it needs for him to retire injured midway through the second week

Thompson is out as well. Next on the list is Feli who is 4 places and 35 points behind Dan.

Not quite -- just the 5 setter part. Not sure I have seen him retire.

So sad to see that Kokkinakis gave a walkover - that man has been SO beset by injuries these past three or four years :(

THere's still three Aussies in the last 32, though, the same as the Americans.

But Spain get bragging rights with four, including Andujar (who beat Kyle) who won his R2 match extremely easily.

Also on injuries (but recovery from) Chung beats Verdasco in 5. Nice to see "The Professor" back and hopefully healthy.

And does anyone know what happened in the Bedene/Paire match? Paire seems to be insinuating that he was insulted or something?

Didn't see any of it but the French reports say Paire is claiming that Bedene said something to him, behind his towel, when they changed ends at 6-5 in the second set and Paire was due to serve.

Frankly, no idea if he did, or not, or if Paire had done something to deserve it even if he did, but Benoit (who - I believe - had 3 MPs and a ball to lead 5-1 in the final set) should maybe stop being so precious and try and figure out why he lost.

Just watched three minutes of highlights of the Bedene / Paire match and Paire had three match points in the fourth set, so even if Bedene had said something to him, it clearly didn't affect him.

And the French reports of Lucas Pouille's match (against Dan Evans) have Lucas saying 'I was useless, completely useless, from first ball to last'.

But he says it respectfully, he never implies 'I'd have won if I'd been playing properly' or anything like that.

Just that his serve was useless, his UE count was huge, he couldn't get his normal winner shots going, and it was all a nightmare.

He has only won two matches in the last five slams.

I know Andrew Castle gets up a lot of people's noses (mine included), but he does come out in defence of Kyle's patchy record since last year's AO in his column in today's Metro.  He also has some choice words to say about the odious Kyrgios...

P.S.  I see what people mean about Kyle's kit, but feel it is nowhere near as bad as the one he wore at Roland-Garros... wink
