Weeks 35 & 36 - US Open Tennis Championships, Flushing Meadows, NYC - Hard

I was thinking / fearing that last night too Andy, hard to see where she goes from here, and what really is there for her to stay on for? A final go at the Olympics at a push maybe (but then there will probably be 4 Russians ranked higher)? Her main goal was to try and win a slam since the ban to prove that she can, but that's clearly not going to happen, and she'll know it.

She's had flashes this year, beating Dart 0 and 0 and Wozniacki in Melbourne, and a few solid wins here and there likes vs Riske the other week, but if she can't keep fit and play enough, then she's not going to be seeded in these big events, or pretty much any WTA event, and she cetainly won't like defeats like last night. I don't think she'll want to go out like that though - I don't know her forthcoming schedule, but perhaps she'll try and win one of the smaller WTA events in China (where she is popular) this back end, like a Nanchang or Tianjin, where she won her only title since the come back and go out on a mini high, but the clock does seem to be ticking.

I think if Maria had a choice, it would be to go out either after having done really well in a Grand Slam, or after appearing in Moscow or St Petersburg, but the Grand Slam option looks highly unlikely I think, as last night's demolition showed that she is really struggling at the moment and just not close to doing well in a Grand Slam. It was grimly fascinating but also very sad to see her being annhialated so comprehensively by Serena - she did fight a bit more in the second set (and a big well done to Serena for keeping her concentration), but even after about four games of the first set, it was totally clear that there would only be one winner.

It would be a big call for Maria to be picked by Russia for the Olympics - you never know, I guess, but I just can't see her being selected. Maybe the Kremlin Cup in October will be the swansong for her.

Olympic involvement is similar to the Race to Shenzhen and it's basically an accumulation of points from Notttingham 2019 until RG 2020, but there's a max of 4 per country, so she'll have to be in Russia's top 4 and high enough generally to get in, but the 4 Russians will probably be a snag. Poor Venus will have a similar problem, she could finish in the top 50 in that period, but will be competing with so many current top 30 players to get a look in.

Some don't like her, whether it's because of the ban, or they are big Serena fans, but I think it's good having her around so I really hope she can last another year or so. The amount of interest she still brings to the tour is a good thing IMO, and she's proven to young girls that you can be among the biggest 5, 6 or 7 names in your sport regardless of sex, which just doens't happen in many sports where men have a big presence, and will have inspired many of todays players.

Totally agree Ace - hope she keeps going. She is an inspirational figure to many girls and young women and has helped tennis keep a high profile and brought money and interest into the sport over several years - the likes of Anisimova for instance, say that she is the reason that they took up tennis. Don't want an extended debate (again) into the meldonium ban, but suffice to say it was legal for a lot of years and she and her team clearly failed to realise it had been made illegal and so got rightly banned. I hope she can keep going for a few more years; if she could get free of injury, maybe she could improve a bit, but I just can't see her competing at the tail end of Grand Slams any more and so I think she will go.

OK won't have an extended debate, unless you wish to keep it going, about Sharapova and meldonium but I think some response is needed re the investigation and judgement bringing out apparent ongoing subterfuge including much of her team not even knowing about it to be able to alert her.

It helped her, she knew it helped her, so she was keen to keep it as a drug very much out of any limelight as performance enhancing.

... and there is always the possibility that she isn't as good without it, and never would have been.

Whatever the reason, she clearly isn't as good post the ban and her  return as she  had been before and  in her past. Guess we will never know.

Garbine's out. Sigh. This isn't surprising anymore, and Riske can be on fire.

In the LL match, Harriet's FQR victim lost out.

Kirsten Flipkens beat Wang Xiyu by 3-6 6-2 6-2

Pretty much all the other big names have progressed thus far - Andreescu, Osaka, Bertens, Bencic, Kvitova, even Ostapenko got a much needed win. All of them in straights apart from Naomi.

Quite looking forward to the Gauff-Potapova which follows Halep - probably be billed as a new Serena-Sharapova battle. Then the big Belarusian derby later.

Impressive straight sets win for Kalinskaya over Stoane Stephens - didn't see it as it was the middle of the night. CS Navarro also went out to Timea Babos - she was down a set and then pulled out injured. Nice match up next between Babos and Cori Gauff in the second round.

Watched Andreescu. She looked to be struggling with fitness/health issues. Not sure what if anything was wrong but she didn't appear too happy during the match. Maybe she was just annoyed with how she was playing?

There's not many inside the stadium, but a great experience for Bolkvadze here on Ashe against #3 Pliskova, especially with the rain delay on the outside courts - I bet there are many watching her on TV for the first time. Started with a hold to love, 1-1*
