Week 43 - ITF (W25) - Nanning, China - Hard

There are 3 q rounds. Sofia Shapatava is also in the q draw so the two should be in the doubles as well.

QR1: Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (GBR) [q8] 535 vs BYE

Emily's first opponent here received a walkover in her first round; expect the match to be relatively tight.

Well the match was tight - and Emily was on the losing end of it

So much harder this week for Emily in singles, compared with the draws she had last week that allowed her to garner 19 pts...

Let's hope its a better week for the doubles

QR2: Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (GBR) [q8] 535 lost to Ying ZHANG (CHN) 664 (CH:356 March 17) 4-6 6-0 5-10

For the doubles, Emily and Sofia are top seeds this week and face a Chinese WC pair first up.

Having fought back in the first, two doubles in the tiebreaker see them *3-6 down.

Recover to 6-6*, *7-6

Boom. First set sneaked 7-6(6)

Phew! I was a bit worried about the match going to a mtb.

Sofia and Emily made much more of a meal of that than I expected. One of their next opponents is likely to be Valerie Savinykh who partnered Harriet last week until Harriet withdrew. For some reason Valerie's match was the only R16 match held over until tomorrow.

R16: Sofia SHAPATAVA/ Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (GEO/GBR) [1] 348 (169+179) def Meiqi GUO/ Mei Xu WU (CHN/CHN) [WC] 777 (400+377) 7-6(6) 6-4

Well it wasn't Valeria, as she and her partner lost in the first round to a chinese pair. But Sofia and Emily are through to the semifinal as they were given a walkover.

QF:- Sofia SHAPATAVA/ Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (GEO/GBR) [1] 348 (169+179) "defeated" Shuyue MA (CHN) / Meiling WANG (CHN) CR1410 (738+672) by Walkover

SF:- Sofia SHAPATAVA/ Emily WEBLEY-SMITH (GEO/GBR) [1] 348 (169+179) v Siqi CAO / Dan Ni WANG (CHN/CHN) CR925 (507+418)

Pity for Em & Sofia.

Em now though has nothing to defend until next April. So a real window to keep pushing up her doubles ranking. For now that would be whenever she exceeds 18 points, her bottom 2 counters.
