Week 42 - ITF M25 - Hamburg, Germany (indoor hard)

Shame that for the second day in a row Anton has been put on the only non-streamed court

However, always nice to flick on the scores and see, oh dear, he's 1-3 down - BUT then flick on a few minutes later to see it's been rectified and it's now 2-2

AND then flick on and see he's broken and leads *3-2

L16:  (7) Markus Eriksson (SWE) WR 328 (CH = 277 in August last year) vs  (Q) Anton Matusevich WR 576

 doesn't really matter but Anton beat Baptiste 6-2 6-4, not 7-5 6-4

It's not just on here that he doesn't get much recognitionbiggrin I like him, maybe not the most talented or everyones cup of tea but has a good head on his shoulders and clearly very driven. He was my joker in the year end rankings thing but obviously the players further down the rankings have really been hit hard by Covid regs

You're quite right, emmsie.

He was not my pick as a 17 year-old (George Loff and Jack were more impressive, Anton was very flat-footed, never moved, just swung).

But I was wrong and he's grown into his game - as you say, partly due to drive and intelligence. Uses his power and has worked/is working on the other bits.

And respect for that.

AND he's just taken the first set 6-4

An underestimated aspect of a sport.  I can think of a few Brit players that need a bit of Antons inteliigence.

Yes, well done, Anton - a very good run of very nice wins, in two sets, beating players ranked quite a bit higher than him.

QF:  (Q) Anton Matusevich WR 576 vs (4) Manuel Guinard (FRA) WR 295 (CH = 284 in August)

I've never thought of Manuel as a real threat.

He's better on clay, I think, and plays quite a bit of doubles too. Not really making the progress he needs in singles.

His results are pretty spotty too - won a 25k recently but that was on clay.

Anton's match is streamed today, on the ITF site, currently on serve at 2-1*

Anton was a bit unlucky there.

The first set was terribly close, and good strong tennis.

He had 6 BPs, and had the better of the set really.

And on four of those BPs, Guinard cracked great serves (aces and quasi-aces - although all down the T, did you see that Anton???)

But he couldn't quite get the break on the point that ended up in a rally.

And Guinard played a slightly better TB - and took the first set 7-6(4)

Thought it was 3-4 with Anton a break down in the 2nd but it turns ot it was a mark on my screen and Anton has a break in the 2md currently 3-1

Don't you love those marks on the screen ? biggrin

Yep, second set looking good, and deservedly so.
