L32: (SE) Daniel Evans WR 33 defeated (Q) Aljaz Bedene (SLO) WR 53 by 6-3 4-5 retired
*****
L16: (SE) Daniel Evans WR 33 vs (WC) Jurij Rodionov (AUT) WR 153 (CH = 148 earlier this month)
Rodionov beat Shapo (8) in straight sets yesterday...
Take that win over Bedene however it comes, although a scoreline like that sounds about right - any idea what Aljaz injury was?
Nice to see Evans beat Traitordene.
In general I like your dry sense of humour Vandenburg and tend not to take offense when you are being intentional controversial to stir up conversation..
But in this case, I am sorry, but I don't like the use of the word "traitor" for anyone.
He was a traitor, he has not represented Slovakia or Slovenia (can't remember which of these he is from) in DC or Olympics since he switched back, so what was the point.
If what he says is true and the biggest thing in his life was to represent Slo-country at the Olympics, why did he leave his homeland nationality in the first place.
I differ from Evans argument, 'that he was never British', I take a different line, where I don't think he was ever that bothered. He knew when he switched, he was going to potentially have a floater career, ranked 50-150 for rest of his life. But being a floater under GB flag, was better, more money from LTA than the STA, and guaranteed wildcards in summer.

This is not about the rights and wrongs of what Aljaz did, it is just the choice of word that I am uncomfortable with. Perhaps we have a different interpretation of that particular word. For me it implies that the person has intentionally chosen a course of action to "harm" the person he/she betrayed. While I am sure some people felt let down by his decisions, I don't believe he deliberately set out to cause damage to anyone.

You might call Bedene self-serving but that's not the same as a traitor.
Personally, I don't think it was particularly self-serving either - he moved here at 18, lived here, had his life here. Then - when he couldn't play Davis Cup and his girlfirend wanted to move back - he moved back.
As Bob says, that's not deliberately doing any harm, he hasn't committed treason.
(And it's no different from Cam, from Jan, from Naithka, from a ton of players who change tennis allegiance, for an array of reasons but always - fundamentally - because it benefits them)
Bedene has actually played DC ties since switching back -pretty sure his brother is involved in the DC as well.
Also, I think he still lives in the UK (therefore paying taxes). Since switching back from GB, Bedene has more or less been ranked around the same as Norrie (mid top 100), getting some decent wins in tournaments etc.
But all in all, not sure what he would have added to GB tennis. Again just a really steady player, and ironically, id fancy Edmund and Norrie to take him down on clay. If were British, he's not exactly be walking into the team on any surface.

Allegedly Bedenes girlfriend Kimie's pop career was a consideration - formerly part of the Europop group the Foxy Teens, Kimie tried to break into the UK pop market. Despite becoming a protege of Herts tennis team captain Jeff 'War of the Worlds' Wayne her voice/style was too Europop for the British market.
