Liam & Dmitry have given the 3rd seeds a walkover. Dmitry retired from his singles. So the 3rd seeds are in the Semi Final without hitting a ball.

If folks follow Chris Goldsmith, he points to Popko a lot as someone who retires from matches, someone not to bet on...

L16:  (PR) Blaz Kavcic (SLO) WR 268 (CH = 68 in in August 2012 - he's now 33) vs Liam Broady WR 202

The Slovene got past the third seed, JJ Wolf, courtesy of the latter's retirement at 0-2 in the second set.

Tennis on telly Tennis

@tennisontelly

Liam Broady and Dmitry Popko have withdrawn from the doubles in Parma. Quentin Halys and Tristan Lamasine are straight into the semis. Popko also withdrew from singles with gastroenteritis

Liam won the first set really easily, 6-1.

Just lost the second 5-7

Now into a third

Liam - STOP backing off from the net when you come in - it's driving me mad - take a step forward, go meet the ball, remember what your first coach must have told you!

Pleased for him.

Liam deserved that. He was the better player overall. Nice distribution of the ball from the back of the court.

 Absolutely biggrin

He actually won one point in the third set at the net - a pretty dodgy one too, as the first volley could well have drifted out.

But after the instantaneous shock, I actually cheered out loud smile

Was that the one early game 6 and deep into the Kavcic forehand corner by any chance ?  Kavcic threw up a lob for the easy smash.

Yep, that's the one

Nice point, well won, but that first volley was not completely under control (IMO)

It was definitely a bit "floaty" and I was surprised when it dropped in.

Yeah, I think the players were surprised too smile

But, seriously, nice to see Liam really stringing some consistent results together and playing like a top-200 player (I sort of feel he will never be top 100 but if he can hold in there, nicely in the top-200, he has a sustainable tennis career - will make grand slam qualis, will get MD WC at Wimbly, will have some good runs here and there, all good.....

I've enjoyed watching him these last few weeks (well, apart from the occasional scream at the screen, of course no)

Now the 3rd seeds have given the 2nd seeds a walkover into the final. 2 matches played in the whole of the bottom half of the draw!
