Sad to see Jo Ko go out like that - more injury woes for her, but sensible to pull out if she knew she couldn't play anywhere near maximum
I thought Fran did pretty well in the first set against Shelby Rogers, who is an experienced and quality opponent.
After the nerves of the first three games led her to overhitting everything, she had a really good spell, and although she fell away after losing her serve at the end of the first set, that good spell in the first set should give her confidence that she is not far away from being good enough to play in the top 100. She should also take heart from the fact that she qualified for a major - all in all a tough day at the office and a steep learning curve for her, but still lots of positives to take from the match.

Am I mistaken - in Frans match, set 2 and her first service game with the score at 0-30, it looked like a ball was a foot out but wasnt called. Fran complained to no avail so 0-40 then lost the game and eventually the set. I was watching Dans match so not entirely focussed but if so, it was a huge mistake.
It wasn't obvious what caused Jo Ko to retire, but she clearly couldn't serve properly due to whatever problem she had and Juvan was too good and the match too early for Jo to struggle on in the vain hope of stumbling across the line.
An abdominal injury, like flamingowings says, would lead to the lack of movement in her serve, so that sounds likely. It was still a surprise when she suddenly shook hands though.

Agree goldfish - that ball was well out and others on that base-line looked very tight
Really enjoyed Heather's match - I don't thing I've ever seen her play with such confidence and so consistently before
I gather that Hawkeye only covers the area close to the line, so if the ball is that far out the umpire is supposed to call it - unless they are asleep in the sun of course ........

I have a vague recollection of that happening to Lendl at Wimbledon when they had those service line things.
